About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential digital technology consultancy seeking a Principal Backend Developer to join their London-based team. This hybrid role offers the flexibility to work remotely while connecting with colleagues in their London office two days per week. Our client works on complex, business-critical transformation projects across multiple industries, and this position will play a strategic leadership role in shaping technical direction across collaborative programmes.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a strategic technical leader, guiding robust architectures, data strategies, and cloud-native environments across multiple development squads
  • Partner with client technical and business stakeholders to understand technology estates and advise on impactful digital solutions
  • Shape architectures across multiple teams, selecting tools and frameworks that optimise for cost, security, performance, and scalability
  • Serve as a trusted advisor on technical strategy and roadmaps, translating complex technical concepts for senior stakeholders
  • Champion technical excellence by making thoughtful architectural choices that balance competing priorities
  • Define and evolve technical standards while contributing to the organisation's shared body of knowledge
  • Mentor Lead and Senior Engineers, fostering cross-team alignment on technical standards
  • Navigate complex client organisations and balance commercial constraints with high technical standards

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience designing, documenting, and scaling complex back-end architectures, distributed systems, and microservices
  • Strong expertise with database designs (SQL and other technologies) within cloud-native environments, particularly Azure
  • Demonstrated experience with API management, maintenance, and scaling
  • Strong leadership capability to set clear technical direction and maintain high standards across complex enterprise projects
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Proven track record of mentoring and developing senior engineers and technical leaders
  • Pragmatic, forward-thinking approach with enthusiasm for applying AI across the Software Development Life Cycle
  • Experience fostering collaborative cultures of continuous learning and psychological safety
  • Ability to balance passion and potential with technical credentials
