About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential defense technology organization seeking a Chief Engineer for Collaborative Combat Aircraft programs based in London. This is a senior technical leadership role responsible for architecting and deploying advanced autonomy solutions across unmanned aircraft platforms.
Our client develops cutting-edge autonomous systems that support critical operations worldwide. As Chief Engineer, you will serve as the primary technical authority on system architecture, design, development, and integration of autonomy software across multiple aircraft programs.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Chief Engineer on projects developing and deploying autonomy solutions for unmanned aircraft systems
- Lead an engineering team of 6-20 professionals advancing autonomous capabilities and defense system architectures
- Define technical objectives, make critical engineering decisions, and ensure quality of all technical deliverables
- Provide technical leadership across Internal Research and Development initiatives and defense contracts
- Define technical scope and manage requirements, product architectures, interface control documents, and system-level design documentation
- Support customer-facing engineering activities for both defense and internally funded programs
- Contribute to government contract proposal writing and technical presentations
What We're Looking For
Required qualifications:
- BS/MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, or similar degree
- 10+ years of industry experience in autonomy and/or UAS platforms (defense tech, autonomous vehicles, etc.)
- 7+ years delivering software into production or certifiable environments with high reliability requirements
- Strong understanding of guidance, control and navigation (GNC) including controls, estimation, and planning
- Deep knowledge of robotics stack components: controls, estimation, perception, planning
- Experience with software development processes and effective software deployment strategies
- Proven track record defining technical scope, managing requirements, and creating system-level documentation
- Strong problem-solving skills using scientific and technical approaches
- Experience as a customer-facing engineering leader on defense and development programs
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership managing technical teams
Preferred qualifications:
- UK security clearance
