Director of Engineering, Leverage

About This Opportunity

We are representing a well-funded fleet management technology company in their search for a Director of Engineering, Leverage. This is a high-impact leadership role overseeing three distinct engineering squads whose mission is to multiply the delivery capacity of the entire product and engineering organization. You'll lead Foundations Engineering (shared frameworks and services), Builder Experience (modernizing the development lifecycle with AI-assisted and agentic development), and Solutions Engineering (accelerating roadmap commitments through vetted agency partners).

This role reports directly to the VP of Engineering and sits on the senior leadership team. Your primary customers are internal engineering and product teams, and your success will be measured by how much faster you make them. The position also carries a commercial dimension: selecting and managing agency partners, overseeing statements of work, and ensuring contracted work integrates seamlessly as first-class code.

Responsibilities

• Own strategy and outcomes for a portfolio spanning shared frameworks, developer tooling, and partner delivery across three engineering squads
• Make the rest of product and engineering measurably faster through adoption of shared frameworks, elimination of duplicated effort, and data-driven proof of multiplier effects
• Stand up the Solutions Engineering squad to accelerate key account roadmap commitments by building an agency bench, managing contracts and SOWs, and running handoff protocols
• Modernize the product development lifecycle by pursuing step changes in software delivery, leading the shift from AI-assisted to agentic development
• Run disciplined intake processes to protect the pod's charter and prevent it from becoming a catch-all for unowned work
• Hire, develop, and retain engineering managers and senior individual contributors; own performance, succession, and engagement
• Partner with VP of Engineering, CTO, Platform Engineering, and Design System teams on vision and execution at critical interfaces
• Own the pod's budget across tooling and agency spend, accountable for the throughput it delivers

What We're Looking For

Required Experience:

• 3+ years leading engineering organizations as a Director or Senior Engineering Manager, including managing managers
• Experience leading engineering through real scale, growing teams as a business expanded from approximately $100M to $300M in revenue
• Track record leading a platform, foundations, or developer-productivity organization serving other engineering teams, with demonstrated measurement and growth of impact
• Experience delivering meaningful work through outside partners: selecting agencies, managing statements of work, and maintaining quality through handoff
• Daily use of AI development tools and a history of changing how teams build software with them
• Proven ability to attract, develop, and retain strong engineers and future leaders
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, able to make investment cases to executives and technical cases to senior engineers

Valued Plus Experience:

• Experience building applications with Ruby on Rails and React
• Background standing up professional services, field engineering, or partner delivery functions inside a product company
• Experience treating internal platforms as products: adoption metrics, internal customer discovery, deprecation management
• Familiarity with native mobile development (iOS and Android)
