Financial Control Accountant

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential banking technology client in their search for a Financial Control Accountant to join their London-based team on a hybrid basis. Our client is transforming how financial institutions operate through innovative cloud infrastructure, and they need a qualified accountant to strengthen their month-end processes and financial controls as they scale.

This is a hands-on role within a lean Financial Control function. You'll own key areas of the month-end close, prepare and review journals and reconciliations, and drive process improvements that reduce manual work while maintaining rigorous control standards. You'll work closely with FP&A, Treasury, Tax, and external auditors to ensure accurate, timely financial reporting across regulatory, statutory, and management requirements.

Responsibilities

• Own allocated month-end close activities, ensuring accurate and timely delivery
• Prepare, review, and approve general ledger journals with appropriate supporting documentation
• Complete revenue and expense analysis, investigating and communicating variances to stakeholders
• Partner with FP&A to identify and record accruals and accounting adjustments
• Prepare and review bank reconciliations, resolving reconciling items promptly
• Own monthly balance sheet reconciliations for assigned areas, ensuring all balances are fully supported
• Manage monthly capitalisation and amortisation of intangible assets
• Take ownership of non-automated accounting entries with clear audit trails
• Support preparation of management, regulatory, statutory, and tax reporting
• Lead process automation initiatives to reduce manual effort and improve scalability
• Drive adoption of AI-enabled tools to enhance accuracy and productivity
• Coordinate audit information requests and provide timely responses
• Build strong working relationships across Finance and operational teams

What We're Looking For

Essential:

• Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA)
• Strong financial accounting and control experience in regulated financial services, banking, or fintech
• Proven experience managing month-end close, balance sheet reconciliations, and general ledger controls
• Strong technical accounting knowledge with ability to interpret and apply accounting standards
• Experience supporting complex accounting areas with analytical documentation
• Strong understanding of financial controls, governance, and audit requirements
• Demonstrated ability to identify and lead process improvement initiatives
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong financial analysis capability
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
• High attention to detail with a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach
• Ability to thrive in fast-paced, evolving environments

Desirable:

• Experience within a regulated bank or payments organisation
• Share-based payment accounting experience
• Experience supporting statutory accounts, regulatory, or tax reporting processes
• Background implementing finance systems or automation solutions
• Knowledge of data analytics, AI tools, and workflow automation
• Experience with high-volume transaction processing environments
