Head of Engineering, Field Verification

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential fintech organization in their search for a Head of Engineering, Field Verification. This is a remote role based in London.

You will own the technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for a field verification platform that coordinates physical, in-person identity and business checks. This platform serves multiple business units across onboarding, credit, compliance, and fraud prevention. The domain has never had dedicated engineering leadership, and you will be the first leader to set its strategic direction.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Defining and executing the technical strategy for the field verification platform end to end, moving it from operational maintenance mode to deliberate, prioritized development
• Leading and growing the existing cross-functional team of engineers, an Engineering Manager, and QA, with the mandate to expand the organization as scope grows
• Building operational efficiency features including trip and route optimization, task allocation, and capacity management for field officers
• Owning the platform's client-facing APIs and webhooks that internal business units integrate with, plus the back office interface those teams depend on
• Delivering a native mobile application for field officers
• Ensuring verification data is structured, auditable, and fit for compliance scrutiny
• Architecting for multi-country expansion as the business enters new markets
• Partnering closely with Product and internal stakeholders across onboarding, credit, compliance, and fraud teams
• Defining architecture standards, engineering processes, quality metrics, and hiring and developing engineering talent

What We're Looking For

Our client needs an engineer who became a leader, not someone who moved into management early and has led from a distance since. You should be capable across backend, web, and mobile disciplines, as this platform spans all three.

Required qualifications:

• 10+ years of overall software engineering experience with substantial hands-on production engineering and strong backend depth (Java and Spring Boot environment)
• At least 5 years of engineering leadership experience, including managing Engineering Managers
• Proven experience building platforms used by multiple distinct user groups and internal business units, with flexibility to serve unanticipated requirements
• Strong collaboration skills with product and business stakeholders, with ability to translate operational requirements into engineering solutions
• Adaptable problem solver who has built across different industries—fintech, e-commerce, logistics, or similar contexts

Strong advantages:

• Experience working with location and geospatial data, including map integrations
• Experience with route, trip, or delivery optimization
• Experience building for compliance where data must be structured to evidence what was done and when
• Experience with identity, KYC, or verification platforms
