About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential software organization in a specialized search for a Lead Accountant. Our client operates a multi-entity group across the United States and Canada, serving institutional customers with recurring revenue software solutions. The finance team is lean, focused, and currently managing a significant ERP migration while maintaining tight monthly discipline.

This is not a role where you'll supervise from a distance. You will own the monthly close, run the reconciliations yourself, drive collections improvement against a measurable baseline, and carry the finance workstreams of a NetSuite implementation for your areas. You will also supervise two team members and build the documentation and processes the function needs as it scales.

What You'll Own

Monthly and Quarterly Close

  • Own and execute the close calendar across all group entities, landing it on the agreed date every month
  • Prepare and review journal entries including accruals, prepaids, deferred revenue, intercompany, and foreign exchange
  • Maintain documented balance sheet reconciliations for every material account with supporting schedules a third party can follow
  • Prepare the monthly reporting pack with variance commentary that explains what moved and why
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies between reports, documenting the reconciliation

Revenue Accounting Under ASC 606

  • Apply revenue recognition policy across SaaS subscriptions, licenses, support contracts, implementation services, and training
  • Own deferred revenue and contract asset roll-forwards, reconciled to the contract population
  • Review new and renewing contracts against the revenue checklist and escalate non-standard arrangements
  • Maintain policy schedules and flag gaps where policy does not address current transactions

Order to Cash and Collections

  • Own billing accuracy across renewals, new business, change orders, and professional services
  • Manage the accounts receivable ledger and collections process with documented dunning cycles and escalation paths
  • Drive measurable improvement in aging profile—one legacy entity currently carries most receivables past 30 days
  • Work cross-functionally with sales, customer success, and public sector procurement contacts to resolve collection issues
  • Manage accounts payable workflow, vendor master integrity, payment runs, and 1099/T4A reporting

NetSuite Migration and Operations

  • Execute finance-side migration work: opening balance validation, sub-ledger tie-out, historical comparatives, and parallel-run reconciliation
  • Operate NetSuite modules including general ledger, AR/AP, revenue, and multi-currency
  • Build saved searches, reports, and dashboards to replace offline spreadsheets
  • Document configurations and write desk procedures for sustainability

Team Supervision and Process

  • Supervise a Staff Accountant and Accounting Administrator—allocate work, review output, set standards, and develop their skills
  • Document procedures for the entire team, moving knowledge out of individual heads and onto paper
  • Recommend team structure as the group grows

Audit, Tax, and Controls

  • Prepare audit and review schedules, manage request lists, and meet deadlines
  • Support indirect tax compliance across US sales and use tax (including software nexus), Canadian GST/HST, and registrations
  • Execute finance controls for SOC 2 and ISO 27001 readiness, including approvals, segregation of duties, and access reviews

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Full ownership of monthly close in a multi-entity environment, including reviewing others' work
  • Hands-on ASC 606 experience in subscription software or SaaS—you've prepared deferred revenue roll-forwards and worked multi-element contracts yourself
  • NetSuite experience, hands-on; migration or implementation exposure strongly preferred
  • Multi-currency and intercompany experience—you've prepared translation, remeasurement, and intercompany entries
  • Accounts receivable and collections ownership with a demonstrable track record of improving aging profiles
  • Supervisory experience, including delivering difficult feedback
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and five or more years of progressive accounting experience

Preferred

  • CPA or CA designation, or actively pursuing (our client will support completion)
  • Experience in a private-equity-backed business where monthly discipline and short-notice requests are routine
  • Experience bringing acquired entities onto a group chart of accounts and close calendar
  • Cross-border US and Canada experience, including indirect tax in both jurisdictions
  • Advanced Excel and data fluency—large reconciliations, Power Query, and self-service reporting

How You Work

  • You reconcile rather than choose—when figures disagree, you find the cause and document it
  • You write things down—procedures, schedules, and commentary that outlive the moment
  • You're comfortable being the most senior person in the detail; there's no one above you to hand a hard reconciliation to
  • You escalate early and plainly; bad news travels fast and that is both expected and safe
