Product Manager AI Search (m/w/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential e-commerce organization in Hamburg that is building an AI-powered shopping assistant. In this role, you will own answer quality from observation through deployment, ensuring the assistant delivers genuinely helpful product recommendations from a vast catalog spanning multiple categories and retailers.

• Take full ownership of response quality: assess whether the AI truly understands user intent, whether recommended products are genuinely suitable, and whether explanations add value
• Conduct root-cause analysis when answers fall short—distinguishing whether issues stem from retrieval gaps, missing or incorrect product attributes, or model interpretation errors
• Write and deploy prompt sets, hints, and rules directly; refine attributes and facets yourself; build test sets hands-on and automate repetitive tasks
• Measure impact systematically using fixed collections of test queries, evaluating changes across the entire set rather than cherry-picking examples
• Collaborate closely with data and engineering teams, translating observations into clear, prioritized requirements supported by examples and metrics
• Support partner onboarding by evaluating new product feeds and determining readiness for launch based on quality impact
• Manage category structures, attributes, and facets that determine what the assistant knows about each product—critical for dimensions, compatibility, and hard constraints where semantic similarity alone is insufficient

What We're Looking For

• Relevant professional experience in e-commerce, product management, or a comparable role where you actively drove product development rather than simply coordinating it
• Strong hands-on mentality—you want to build and ship yourself rather than delegate and follow up
• Practical experience working with language models beyond casual prompting: you have systematically improved prompts, compared results, and understand where these systems break down (ideally with Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini)
• Sharp instinct for user needs—you recognize what lies behind a query and when an answer is only superficially correct
• Self-directed, results-oriented work style with enthusiasm for bringing your ideas into the team
• Technical fluency: you can read an API response, understand a data structure, and are comfortable with SQL—you don't need to write production code, but you must be willing to dig in yourself
• Fluent German required; good English skills essential
• Experience with retrieval, ranking, or semantic search is desirable
• Knowledge of product data, feeds, taxonomies, and attribute systems is advantageous
• Familiarity with automation platforms such as n8n, Make, or Python, and with MCP and agent integrations, is a plus
