About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential sports technology company seeking a Software Engineer - Data to help scale their digital infrastructure. This is a chance to work on data pipelines and algorithms that power a growing consumer-facing platform in the sports industry.

This role offers flexibility with remote work options across the EU and UK, or the possibility to work from one of their offices in Cologne, Berlin, or London.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain data pipelines for automated data collection, structured for rapid expansion across new sources and markets
  • Develop algorithms to extract relevant information from websites and images
  • Ensure data quality through validation, confidence levels, monitoring, and clean handovers to internal teams and partners
  • Manage and evolve the data infrastructure for the product area
  • Serve as a technical point of contact within the business unit
  • Develop internal tools enabling teams to collect and correct data independently
  • Create analytics and reports for internal stakeholders and external partners

What We're Looking For

Essential Requirements:

  • 6-8 years of experience in software engineering and data engineering
  • Fluent English (German is a significant plus)
  • Broad technical skillset spanning data pipelines, backend, and some frontend work
  • Experience with automated data pipelines, web scraping, and image processing
  • Strong expertise in databases and data modelling
  • Ability to work independently, even when collaborating primarily with business teams rather than other engineers
  • Quick learner who asks the right questions when entering unfamiliar domains
  • Understanding of when to apply an 80/20 approach versus when 100% accuracy is required
  • Detail-oriented approach to data quality with ability to make uncertainties explicit
  • Data-driven thinking beyond basic analysis—identifying patterns, meaning, and next steps proactively
  • Clean, maintainable code practices including testing and code reviews
  • Experience with Python, PostgreSQL, and modern data tools

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, or Infrastructure as Code (Pulumi/Terraform)
  • Track record presenting and preparing data for non-technical audiences
  • Personal connection to amateur sports

Important Context:

This role involves working largely as a team of two within engineering, with most daily collaboration happening with business stakeholders. You'll have dual reporting lines—technical to engineering and content to the product team—which provides significant autonomy but requires strong self-direction. A substantial portion of the work focuses on data collection and quality rather than greenfield machine learning. The organization works AI-first, with AI tools integrated into standard workflows.
