About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential healthtech organization seeking an Engineering Director to lead their London engineering hub. This is a high-impact leadership role managing 35+ engineers across multiple teams, with growth toward 50. You'll report to the CTO and serve as the primary engineering partner for UK commercial and product leaders while operating with significant autonomy across time zones.
This position is based in London with a hybrid schedule requiring three days per week on-site.
Responsibilities
- Unify two engineering organizations into one cohesive team, establishing unified standards for planning, building, shipping, and accountability
- Manage six to eight engineering managers as direct reports
- Serve as the senior engineering leader for the London site, setting the tone and making it a place where exceptional engineers join and stay
- Partner directly with UK commercial, clinical, and product leaders as a peer, evaluating trade-offs through a commercial lens
- Translate business outcomes into engineering strategy without unnecessary escalation
- Evaluate proposed initiatives for real value delivery and instill product thinking across the management team
- Own senior hiring in London and mentor engineering managers to become effective recruiting partners
- Strengthen delivery predictability, quality, and operational reliability across distributed teams
- Provide dotted-line support for US-focused engineering teams based in London
What We're Looking For
Required qualifications:
- Experience managing an engineering organization of 30+ people through managers
- At least five years developing other engineering managers
- Track record guiding organizations through significant structural change such as integrations, restructures, or operational overhauls
- Active use of AI tooling with demonstrated ability to change how teams build, not just personal workflows
- Commercial fluency with ability to discuss revenue, margin, and prioritization while making speed, scope, and risk trade-offs explicit
- Experience building and scaling systems from the ground up
- Technical strength to partner credibly with senior engineers, evaluate system architecture, and identify when technical estimates lack substance
- Ability to govern ecosystems built on React, React Native, TypeScript, Go microservices, GraphQL, Kubernetes, and GCP
- Comfort managing a site distant from headquarters across various time zones using asynchronous communication
- High agency, independence, and clarity in decision-making
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in regulated sectors (healthtech, fintech, gaming) navigating compliance constraints creatively
- Experience with post-acquisition organizational integration
