Senior AI Engineer, Location AI

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential geospatial technology client in their search for a Senior AI Engineer to join their Location AI division. This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll own the technical design and delivery of multi-component AI systems that power location-aware products used by millions of developers and end users worldwide.

This position offers the opportunity to work across search, navigation intelligence, and platform engineering—solving high-priority AI problems wherever your expertise creates the most impact. You'll move between teams and tech stacks as the work demands, with accountability for quality and production outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Define product behavior, build measurement frameworks, and create evaluation systems for non-deterministic AI features
• Design and implement continuous evaluation pipelines for APIs, SDKs, and reference applications from the end-user perspective
• Own MVP delivery against agreed technical designs, balancing technical excellence with shipping useful increments
• Build and maintain data pipelines including ingestion, conflation, entity resolution, quality checks, and batch/streaming jobs
• Track external datasets, models, and benchmarks from research and open-source releases; evaluate fit and make build-vs-adopt decisions
• Design feedback loops so product usage generates data that improves the system; instrument failures with reproduction context
• Architect the boundary between models and tools they call; build model harnesses and decide delegation patterns
• Optimize to latency and cost targets per request through streaming, caching, model routing, and prompt engineering
• Build internal tooling (CLI, MCP, and others) to accelerate team iteration and share generalizable components
• Elevate team quality through code review, design review, and mentoring on evaluation practices
• Participate in on-call rotation to ensure 24/7 system availability, including response outside normal hours

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in STEM discipline and 5+ years of software engineering experience with production ownership of services, pipelines, or SDKs
• 2+ years shipping LLM-backed features to real users in systems with error budgets, on-call rotations, and regression-sensitive customers
• Direct experience designing evaluations for non-deterministic systems; ability to describe datasets you've built and failures they caught
• Data engineering depth: SQL, at least one distributed processing framework, and experience with pipelines where correctness outweighs speed
• Fluency with tool calling and agent orchestration, including failure modes like stale context, hallucinated arguments, and unbounded loops
• Working knowledge of multiple agent harnesses with informed opinions about their weaknesses
• Strong Python or TypeScript; comfort reading code in various languages
• Experience diagnosing latency in distributed request paths
• Comfort with ambiguity and judgment to ship narrow solutions while broader approaches remain unclear
• Clear written communication for distributed, asynchronous decision-making

Preferred experience:

• Geospatial data: routing, geocoding, POI/address data, or conflation of overlapping sources
• Public API or SDK design for developers you never directly interact with
• Building against MCP or similar tool transports
• Running evaluations in CI with commercial or custom harnesses
• Automotive, in-vehicle infotainment, CarPlay, or Android Auto
• Voice pipelines: streaming ASR, TTS, barge-in, endpointing, wake word
• Work under constrained compute, offline, or intermittent connectivity
• Operating products through first external integrations where customers discover gaps before you do
