About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential digital transformation consultancy based in Stuttgart that is building out their next-generation product division. This is not a traditional ticket-focused engineering role—you'll take ownership of transforming product concepts into production-ready software systems from the ground up.

As Lead Product Engineer, you'll be central to how our client approaches technical decisions for new AI-native products. You'll bring technical perspective into strategic discussions from day one, set architectural standards, make critical infrastructure choices, and build hands-on. If the products scale successfully, your scope of responsibility grows with them.

This role requires regular travel based on project needs—you may work on-site with end clients several days per week depending on the engagement. Remote work is possible when project requirements allow, but you should expect regular presence at company locations in the Stuttgart area for internal events and team collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Assess technical feasibility early—evaluate opportunities for architecture fit, risks, effort, and implementation viability
  • Translate product specifications into sustainable technical solutions and make core architectural decisions
  • Build production software hands-on across the full stack—frontend, backend, data layers, APIs, and operations
  • Ensure production readiness from the start: stability, scalability, security, DevOps, observability, maintainability, and operations
  • Transform prototypes into products—validate quickly, then develop robust, long-term viable systems
  • Develop AI-native software systems—understand where AI adds value, where classical logic is needed, and how both combine into stable products
  • Advance AI-assisted development practices—use coding agents and modern engineering approaches productively, evaluate them critically, and integrate thoughtfully
  • Shape engineering standards—establish architectural principles, tooling, development processes, and quality benchmarks

What We're Looking For

  • Proven track record with software deployed in production environments
  • Experience owning software and understanding real operational requirements that follow
  • Background in a product environment or comparable setting with genuine accountability for quality, utility, and operations
  • Ability to structure open, incompletely defined problems independently, develop solution paths, and determine the right next steps
  • Ownership mentality—you cannot hide behind large teams or narrowly scoped tickets; you take responsibility for outcomes
  • Strong full-stack understanding with ability to build complete applications independently
  • Solid command of modern software development fundamentals—databases, APIs, architecture, testing, cloud, deployment, security, and operations
  • Practical experience with LLMs, AI agents, and AI-based applications; understanding how these integrate with classical software logic
  • Productive use of coding agents and AI-assisted development tools with realistic assessment of their capabilities and limitations
  • Balance of high quality standards with pragmatism—you avoid both over-engineering and short-term solutions that create future technical debt
  • Preference for hands-on work and validating technical decisions through code and real systems
  • Very strong English skills required; German is advantageous but not mandatory
  • No specific degree required—what matters is technical judgment, practical experience, and ability to develop production software holistically
