About This Opportunity
We are representing a fast-scaling workforce technology company that has secured significant venture backing and is experiencing rapid growth across the UK and US markets. Our client processes tens of thousands of payslips monthly for enterprise customers in hospitality, care, and other frontline sectors, and their payroll bureau is expanding ahead of demand.
We're seeking a Payroll Specialist to take hands-on ownership of UK payroll processing for a portfolio of clients. This is a high-pace role in a startup environment where you'll have genuine input into processes and systems as the bureau scales from approximately 15,000 to 22,000 payslips per month.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end UK payroll processing for a portfolio of customers across multiple pay frequencies, covering standard and mid-complexity clients
- Manage payroll queries through the support desk, providing fast, proactive updates and resolving cases within SLA
- Process statutory payments, court orders, standard holiday pay calculations, Alabaster reviews and NMW checks for your portfolio
- Handle workplace pension auto-enrolment, contributions, reconciliations and submissions, flagging any miscalculated contributions for investigation
- Upload, reconcile and submit payments across BACS, Faster Payments and SEPA, and manage payroll journal uploads and reconciliations
- Manage HMRC filings (FPS, EPS) and year-end processing, escalating disputed or mis-allocated PAYE cases appropriately
- Build strong working relationships with clients and attend client meetings when needed
- Identify and flag process gaps or improvements within your portfolio and support junior team members
What We're Looking For
- 2+ years hands-on experience processing multiple UK payrolls independently
- Experience within a bureau or outsourced payroll environment is a bonus
- Good working knowledge of UK payroll and tax compliance, including tax calculations and filing and payment requirements
- Confident managing a busy queue of support tickets with strong organisational skills
- Clear written and verbal communication abilities
- Comfortable in Excel (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, concatenation) and Google Suite
- Methodical and accurate under volume, with the ability to flag issues proactively
- Bonus qualifications: CIPP or equivalent, exposure to Irish payroll (PAYE, PRSI, USC), or experience using AI tools in daily work
