Senior Search Backend Engineer

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential ecommerce platform provider seeking a Senior Search Backend Engineer for their London office. In this role, you will develop a modern, integrated search experience that powers product discovery and search capabilities across multiple domains.

Your day-to-day work will include:

• Designing and implementing search functionalities in a Scala-based PaaS backend environment
• Learning Scala and functional programming as your primary development tools
• Developing search-related libraries based on ElasticSearch and MongoDB
• Running and maintaining scalable search infrastructure as code on Kubernetes using Terraform and multi-tenant architecture
• Testing software components for usability, functionality, and performance
• Collaborating closely with Product Management and DevOps teams
• Participating in on-call rotations with a worldwide distributed team for production systems

This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in the London office.

What We're Looking For

Our client needs a creative problem-solver who thrives on tackling complex technical challenges and making them simple for others. The ideal candidate brings curiosity, a collaborative mindset, and strong technical expertise.

Required qualifications:

• At least 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer working with JVM-based languages
• Search-related experience, preferably with ElasticSearch
• Strong DevOps mindset with the ability to drive infrastructure improvements
• Interest in working with Scala using pragmatic functional programming patterns
• Practical experience developing server-side systems using the JVM
• Solid understanding of parallel and asynchronous programming, as well as non-blocking I/O
• Experience developing REST APIs and knowledge of scalable architectures including sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover
• Fluent English for work in international teams
• Genuine curiosity for using AI tools to work more effectively

Nice to have:

• Experience with scalable event-driven architectures including queues, notification topics, and related patterns
• Previous experience working with Scala or other functional programming languages
• Experience with infrastructure technologies like Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust
