Senior/Staff Platform Engineer (m/f/x)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential AI technology company in Berlin that is scaling rapidly and needs an experienced platform engineer to establish architectural foundations and reliability standards across their production systems.

This is a senior-level platform engineering role sitting at the intersection of backend development, DevOps, and SRE. You will own the architecture of distributed systems running AI workloads in a high-accuracy domain where reliability matters. Your primary customers are other engineers, and your job is to build the shared primitives, APIs, and infrastructure that let product teams ship quickly without accumulating technical debt.

Responsibilities

You will work across four key areas:

• Product Platform: Design and build shared libraries, APIs, and golden paths that make secure, reliable, and scalable patterns the default for product engineers. Own the core architecture and define what gets standardized across the stack.
• Infrastructure & Reliability: Manage infrastructure as code, operate production Kubernetes clusters, provision cloud resources, and build high-signal observability with SLIs, SLOs, and distributed tracing. Drive down infrastructure and AI compute costs.
• Security & Compliance: Implement secure-by-default foundations including IAM, secrets management, and authentication/authorization systems. Own SOC 2 and ISO 27001 controls with minimal friction for development teams.
• AI Development Tooling: Maintain documentation, agent guidelines, and development environments that keep teams productive and aligned with architectural standards.

Concrete examples of work include: systems for managing agent configurations under strict auditability requirements; centralized progress tracking across parallel executions; usage-based billing with quotas and rate limiting; building SLIs for background job systems and resolving performance bottlenecks; document processing pipelines handling large files and high-volume parallel uploads.

What We're Looking For

You have designed, built, and operated distributed systems end to end. You understand how every component interacts and have taken a system from concept through production while owning it completely—choosing technology, arguing tradeoffs in writing, provisioning infrastructure, and responding when things break.

Required experience:

• Strong backend software engineering and DevOps/SRE capabilities, viewing these as complementary rather than separate disciplines
• Production experience scaling relational databases like Postgres under real load
• Running production Kubernetes clusters
• Building observability systems from scratch: defining SLIs, establishing SLOs, implementing distributed tracing
• Writing technical design documents, RFCs, ADRs, and postmortems
• Distinguishing essential complexity from accidental complexity and making pragmatic tradeoff decisions

Nice to have:

• Experience with durable workflow orchestrators like Temporal, background job processing, and queue systems
• Infrastructure work supporting LLM-based products or agentic systems
• Work in high-accuracy domains such as audit, finance, or compliance
• Azure or GCP cloud platform experience

You should be comfortable using AI tools to accelerate implementation, but the system design and architectural reasoning must come from you. This role requires someone who can hold the mental model of complex systems and defend every technical decision.
