University Privacy Officer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential higher education institution in their search for a University Privacy Officer. Our client serves a large, geographically distributed learner population and is building out a mature, enterprise-wide privacy program. This is a strategic role reporting to senior legal leadership, with responsibility for developing privacy governance frameworks, operationalizing compliance processes, and partnering across academic and administrative functions.

This position is remote and can be performed from most U.S. states. Our client requires that remote employees have reliable internet access and a dedicated workspace.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and maturation of a comprehensive, risk-based privacy program covering the full data lifecycle
• Chair Privacy Committee(s) and participate in cross-functional governance bodies
• Develop and oversee implementation of privacy policies, standards, procedures, and communication strategies
• Conduct and continuously improve privacy risk assessments, including Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and enterprise-wide risk evaluations
• Partner with information security, legal, and compliance teams to integrate privacy into institutional risk management frameworks
• Oversee third-party privacy assessments and audit remediation activities
• Monitor regulatory developments and translate requirements into actionable institutional practices
• Support privacy incident response coordination and develop processes for issue escalation and resolution
• Design and implement comprehensive privacy training and awareness programs
• Serve as the institution's privacy subject matter expert, providing consultation on data use, analytics, and emerging technologies
• Prepare annual privacy program reports for senior leadership

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree required
• 10+ years of experience in privacy, compliance, or risk management, with demonstrated experience in enterprise-wide privacy assessments, governance, committee leadership, and program development
• Relevant professional certifications such as CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT, or similar
• Proven track record building or significantly contributing to privacy or compliance programs
• Strong knowledge of U.S. privacy laws and regulations including FERPA, GLBA, and HIPAA
• Familiarity with global privacy frameworks such as GDPR, UK GDPR, DPDPA, PIPL, and PIPEDA
• Experience working in complex, decentralized organizations of significant scale; background in environments with large volumes of personal data, multi-state regulatory obligations, or enterprise-wide technology platforms strongly preferred
• Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills for assessing compliance risks and developing appropriate responses
• Sound ethical judgment, discretion with sensitive information, strong collaboration skills, adaptability, initiative, and diplomacy
