Freelance IoT Software Engineer (all genders)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential construction technology organization seeking a freelance Senior IoT Software Engineer for a 10-month project focused on smart building infrastructure. This is a hands-on role supporting critical IoT and edge computing initiatives.

Your day-to-day work will include:

• Building and configuring Linux-based IoT and edge systems for connected building environments
• Developing device-to-cloud communication pipelines for telemetry, control, and automation
• Working on edge computing components running on embedded Linux systems
• Implementing device lifecycle management including provisioning, configuration, monitoring, and OTA updates
• Improving zero-touch provisioning using Kotlin, Spring Boot, Linux, and BLE/Bluetooth Mesh technologies
• Enhancing monitoring capabilities with BLE/Bluetooth Mesh, Grafana, Prometheus, OTel Collector, and Spring Boot
• Building a Proof of Concept for new building operations system architecture based on defined functional requirements
• Creating internal tools and automation for IoT fleet operations and diagnostics
• Ensuring system reliability, security, and observability across edge and cloud layers
• Collaborating closely with Product, Hardware, Platform, and Software teams

This freelance engagement requires 30–40 hours per week and is open to candidates based anywhere in the EU.

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Strong experience with Linux-based systems in production environments
• Knowledge of IoT connectivity technologies including BLE, LoRaWAN, and WMBus
• Hands-on experience with IoT protocols such as MQTT
• Hands-on experience with embedded systems or edge computing
• Solid understanding of distributed and event-driven architectures
• Proficiency in Kotlin
• Experience with containers, cloud platforms, and infrastructure components such as PostgreSQL, Redis, message brokers, and Kubernetes clusters
• Experience with telemetry, streaming data, and time-series data
• A collaborative mindset and willingness to take ownership

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience with embedded Linux, OTA systems, or secure device identity
• Knowledge of observability and monitoring across edge and cloud systems
