About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization in Berlin seeking a Head of IT to lead their technical operations. Our client is building a platform that solves customer acquisition challenges, and they need an experienced technology leader to drive delivery, stability, and scalability across their engineering organization.

This is a remote-first position within Germany, with occasional quarterly on-site meetings in Berlin. You'll report directly to the CTO and take ownership of day-to-day technical operations, team leadership, and cross-functional delivery.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a technical team of approximately 8 professionals across development, data, and infrastructure—including 1:1s, goal-setting, performance development, and recruiting
• Own operational management of the technology organization: prioritization, resource planning, escalations, and decision-making currently handled by the CTO
• Drive roadmap execution across product, data, software, and infrastructure, ensuring committed timelines are met
• Establish predictable delivery processes: implement clear workflows for planning, development, testing, and releases, making progress visible across the organization
• Build reliable data foundations: create trusted metrics for leads, appointments, and orders that sales, marketing, and leadership can depend on
• Ensure platform stability, security, and scalability—from monitoring and incident management to backups, access controls, and GDPR compliance
• Remain technically engaged: evaluate architectural decisions, participate in code reviews, and maintain the ability to review code when necessary
• Actively manage technical debt: identify it, assess economic impact, and negotiate with business stakeholders on remediation timing
• Serve as the primary technical partner to business teams, translating requirements into technical implementation
• Manage external vendors and tools, including selection, contracts, and IT budget responsibility

What We're Looking For

• Minimum 2 years leading technical teams (3+ people) as Head of Engineering, Engineering Manager, Team Lead, Head of IT, or similar role
• Solid technical background as a software developer (ideally 5+ years)—you've built what you now lead
• Cross-disciplinary leadership experience: beyond development, you've worked with data and/or infrastructure teams
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), CI/CD, and modern web platform architectures
• Strong prioritization skills: ability to say no with justification and maintain course when multiple departments compete for resources
• Process implementation experience: you've introduced workflows that teams actually follow without creating bureaucracy
• Data-driven approach: you measure before deciding and make results transparent to stakeholders
• Excellent communication with non-technical audiences: you can explain technical timelines and constraints to sales, marketing, and executive leadership in ways they understand and accept
• Self-directed and execution-focused: you identify what needs doing rather than waiting for assignments
• Very strong German language skills (minimum C1 level) and good English proficiency
• Preferred: experience in fast-growth environments (start-up, scale-up, or agency)
• Bonus: familiarity with lead generation, performance marketing, or B2B SaaS

Key milestones in your first year:

• 0-3 months: Complete team assessment, conduct all 1:1s, document critical risks in stability/security/delivery/data, assume daily operations from CTO
• 4-6 months: Establish visibility into work in progress, implement monitoring/alerting/incident processes, close critical security and compliance gaps, launch first reliable metrics reporting
• 7-12 months: Demonstrate measurable delivery improvements, execute technical debt reduction plan, grow team according to business needs, support planned growth without stability issues
