Engineering Manager (w/m/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization focused on public sector digital transformation in Germany. This is a hands-on Engineering Manager role where you'll lead a team of 5 engineers while remaining technically engaged in architecture and code. The position offers the opportunity to drive an AI-first engineering culture and deliver meaningful impact through technology.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of 5 engineers both technically and organizationally, providing regular feedback and supporting individual growth
• Drive cultural transformation toward AI-assisted development practices, where AI agents generate production code under human direction
• Remain hands-on with architecture decisions and complex technical challenges, delivering direct product value
• Ensure reliable delivery, system stability, and availability for your area of responsibility
• Systematically reduce technical debt while maintaining product velocity
• Co-lead your team alongside a Product Manager in a dual leadership model
• Collaborate closely with other Engineering Managers, Senior Software Architects, and Head of Development
• Drive recruitment and onboarding of new team members
• Champion continuous learning and development as a core team objective
• Prioritize work based on user and business value, maintaining a value-driven approach

What We're Looking For

Required Skills and Experience:

• Several years of experience in both technical and people leadership of engineering teams
• Passion for staying close to the team and code while providing direct, personal leadership
• Strong technical understanding at the architecture level with ability to contribute hands-on when needed
• Solid experience with TypeScript and Vue3 frontend development, Python backend development
• Clear vision for AI-first development: you can effectively direct, orchestrate, and control AI agents to generate code while humans maintain responsibility for direction, architecture, and quality standards
• Experience with modern cloud and container infrastructure, CI/CD, and "you build it, you run it" culture
• Strong people and culture skills: empathy, active listening, conflict resolution, and ability to build sustainable trust
• Experience with situational leadership, adapting your style to team maturity and context
• Strong sense of ownership and accountability for team deliverables
• Change mindset and pioneering spirit: you question the status quo, experiment boldly, and inspire others to embrace change
• German at native or C2 proficiency level

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in the public sector or with B2G products
• Experience building or scaling engineering organizations in startup or scale-up environments
