Senior Engineering Manager (w/m/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization that is transforming how public sector processes are managed through AI-driven automation. Our talent team is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing engineering team in Germany while remaining hands-on with architecture and code.

This is a unique opportunity to drive an AI-first engineering culture where AI agents produce the majority of code under human direction. You'll lead both the technical and people aspects of a 5-person engineering team, working closely with product management and senior architecture leadership.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of 5 engineers with both technical and people management responsibilities, providing regular feedback and fostering individual development
• Drive cultural transformation toward AI-assisted development, where AI agents generate most production code under human orchestration and quality control
• Remain hands-on with architecture decisions and complex technical challenges, delivering direct product value through code contributions
• Ensure reliable delivery, system stability, and availability within your area of responsibility while systematically addressing technical debt
• Co-lead the team as a dual leadership structure alongside the Product Manager
• Collaborate closely with other Engineering Managers, Senior Software Architects, and the Head of Development
• Drive recruitment and onboarding of new team members
• Prioritize work based on user and business value, maintaining a value-driven approach to all decisions
• Develop the team's technical and organizational capabilities to adapt to rapidly changing environments

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Several years of experience in both disciplinary and technical leadership of engineering teams
• Strong technical understanding at the architecture level with ability to contribute hands-on code where needed
• Deep experience with TypeScript and Vue3 for frontend, Python for backend
• Clear commitment to AI-first development: you can orchestrate, control, and direct AI agents to produce code while humans define direction, architecture, and quality standards
• Experience with modern cloud and container infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and "you build it, you run it" culture
• Strong people and culture skills including empathy, active listening, conflict resolution, and trust-building
• Experience with situational leadership, adapting your style to team maturity and context
• Ownership mindset and accountability for team deliverables
• Willingness to challenge the status quo and pioneer new approaches
• German language skills at native or C2 level
• Enthusiasm for staying close to both the team and the code while leading personally and directly

Preferred:

• Experience with public sector or B2G products
• Background in building or scaling engineering organizations in startup/scale-up environments
