Senior Backend Engineer (m|w|d) – Java/Kotlin, AWS, Kafka

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential e-commerce technology organization seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their CRM Tech team in Berlin. This team delivers the technical infrastructure that powers personalized user engagement campaigns, handling identity resolution, subscriptions, data flows, and message delivery while maintaining strict GDPR compliance.

In this role, you'll design and maintain scalable backend systems that support customer relationship management and user engagement across multiple domains. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams to build robust solutions that integrate seamlessly across the organization's technical ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain reliable and scalable software systems and data flows for CRM and user engagement use cases
• Collaborate with Software Engineers, Data Engineers, Product Managers, and stakeholders to deliver solutions that integrate across domains and teams
• Contribute to architectural and technical decision-making, ensuring high code quality and operational excellence
• Take ownership of services throughout their lifecycle, from design and implementation to monitoring and continuous improvement
• Ensure best practices for testing, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure are applied and continuously evolved
• Support and mentor less experienced engineers through knowledge sharing, code reviews, and fostering collaborative team culture
• Explore and adopt new tools and technologies to improve development efficiency and system performance

What We're Looking For

Required Skills:

• Strong experience in backend development with Java (Spring Boot) or Kotlin
• Solid understanding of cloud-based architectures, preferably on AWS (Lambda, S3, Glue, SNS/SQS)
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code (AWS CDK, Terraform)
• Experience with monitoring and operational excellence practices
• Familiarity with event-driven systems and tools such as Kafka, as well as microservice architectures
• Good knowledge of SQL and experience handling structured and semi-structured data

Nice-to-Have:

• Experience working with data pipelines, APIs, and data integration processes (schemas, transformations, ETL)
• Experience with TypeScript or Snowflake
• Experience with AI/LLM-assisted engineering tools
