The Opportunity
The City of Philadelphia is modernizing its digital infrastructure to better serve residents and streamline government operations. We're seeking an experienced Android engineer to lead the design and development of mobile applications that make city services more accessible. You'll work within a collaborative team dedicated to creating intuitive, secure, and scalable mobile experiences for one of America's major cities.
Your Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain native Android applications using modern frameworks and best practices
- Lead technical architecture and code reviews to ensure high-quality, maintainable mobile solutions
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and backend engineers to translate requirements into polished applications
- Implement secure data handling and integrate with city systems and APIs
- Troubleshoot performance issues and optimize applications for reliability across diverse Android devices
- Mentor junior developers and contribute to team knowledge sharing and skill development
- Participate in testing, deployment, and continuous improvement of production applications
Skills & Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional Android development experience with demonstrated expertise in Java and/or Kotlin
- Deep knowledge of Android SDK, lifecycle management, and modern architecture patterns (MVVM, MVI, or similar)
- Experience building and deploying applications through Google Play or similar distribution platforms
- Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, JSON, and integration with backend services
- Proven ability to write unit tests, conduct code reviews, and maintain high code quality standards
- Experience with version control systems (Git) and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively within a team
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
