Position Summary
We are seeking a senior physicist to lead technical development in accelerator design and ion beam physics. As a Scientist 4, you will direct research and provide expert guidance across all phases of accelerator technology development—from initial electromagnetic modeling through operational systems. Your leadership will be central to advancing the Laboratory's accelerator capabilities and scientific mission.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Develop and refine models of ion sources, RF structures, and electromagnetic components using advanced computational tools
- Design accelerating structures informed by theoretical physics and validated simulation techniques
- Lead technical investigations into ion beam physics and accelerator performance optimization
- Provide expert consultation and mentorship to project teams on accelerator design and modeling approaches
- Validate computational models through collaboration with experimental and operational teams
- Contribute to technical reports, publications, and presentations of research and findings
- Support multi-disciplinary accelerator development initiatives from concept through deployment
Requirements
- PhD in physics, electrical engineering, or related discipline
- Extensive expertise in ion source physics and modeling techniques
- Advanced proficiency in RF structure design and electromagnetic simulation
- Strong computational skills and hands-on experience with electromagnetic modeling software
- Demonstrated ability to develop sophisticated physics models and conduct complex analysis
- Proven track record of technical leadership on research projects
- Excellent communication skills for presenting physics and engineering concepts to diverse audiences
- Security clearance eligibility or ability to obtain a clearance
