About the Role
Joining the Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory, you will serve as a technical authority who evaluates how fissile material is handled, processed, and stored across the Laboratory's nuclear facilities. Your analysis confirms that operations stay subcritical under both normal and credible abnormal conditions, directly supporting a mission of national importance.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver expert technical guidance to verify that fissionable material operations remain subcritical during routine and foreseeable off-normal scenarios.
- Partner closely with facility customers and operations staff to understand workflows involving fissile materials in nuclear facilities.
- Perform and document criticality safety evaluations and analyses in line with established standards and Laboratory requirements.
- Translate complex technical findings into clear, actionable safety controls and limits for facility personnel.
- Help sustain a strong safety culture that protects workers, the public, and the environment.
Qualifications
- A background in nuclear engineering, physics, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Working knowledge of criticality safety principles and the behavior of fissionable materials.
- Strong analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail when assessing subcritical conditions.
- Effective communication abilities to collaborate with diverse facility and operations teams.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain the security clearance required for work at a U.S. national security laboratory.
