PATH (People Assisting the Homeless)

Join PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) as a Safety Support Associate at our ABC Hotel interim housing facility in Long Beach, California. In this part-time weekend position, you'll play a critical role in maintaining a secure, stable environment where individuals experiencing homelessness can rebuild their lives.

About the Role

As a Safety Support Associate on PATH's Interim Housing team, you will be the daily presence that ensures our facility operates as a safe, welcoming space for all residents, staff, and visitors. Working Saturdays and Sundays from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM, you'll combine vigilance with compassion—using observation and proven de-escalation techniques to prevent and address conflicts before they escalate. Your work supports vulnerable individuals in crisis, partners with our case management professionals, and upholds the low-barrier principles that make our interim housing approach effective.

What You'll Do

  • Monitor the interim housing facility and grounds, identifying and reporting any maintenance issues, safety hazards, or concerns that may arise during your shift.
  • Build relationships with residents and engage them as partners in maintaining a positive, secure community environment.
  • Partner with our on-site case managers to coordinate responses to participant needs and support service delivery.
  • Collaborate with contracted security personnel to ensure coordinated facility oversight and safety protocols.
  • Respond to incidents and crisis situations using nonviolent crisis intervention strategies, verbal de-escalation, and harm reduction principles, working as part of a coordinated team response.
  • Document incidents and complete required safety reports and incident logs.
  • Contribute perspectives on safety and operations during team meetings and debriefs.
  • Participate actively in all assigned training, including CPR/First Aid certification and safety-focused professional development.
  • Support additional facility needs including meal service, cleaning, and general maintenance as needed.
  • Model and reinforce PATH's commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice in all interactions and decisions.

What We're Looking For

  • Attention to Detail: You spot hazards and discrepancies others might miss, translating observations into actionable safety insights.
  • De-escalation and Crisis Response: You remain calm under pressure, use clear communication to defuse tension, and know when to seek backup—ideally with at least one year of experience in security, crisis intervention, or work with vulnerable populations.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: You build strong working relationships with colleagues, case managers, residents, and security partners, supporting shared goals and learning from diverse perspectives.
  • Clear Communication: You communicate effectively in writing and conversation, documenting incidents accurately and briefing team members on shifts and concerns.
  • Problem-Solving and Initiative: You anticipate needs, suggest improvements, and take action independently to solve problems as they arise.
  • Ethical Standards: You maintain professional boundaries, demonstrate integrity, and make decisions aligned with PATH's values and code of conduct.

Compensation and Requirements

Hourly Rate: $21.71–$26.36 per hour (based on experience); 24 pay periods per year.

  • Authorized to work in the United States (employment eligibility verification required).
  • CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain within required timeframe.
  • Willingness to complete required pre-employment screening: TB test, background check, and drug screening.
  • Experience welcome at all levels—we value enthusiasm and commitment as much as prior background.
