About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential mobility technology company in Berlin that operates an end-to-end platform for vehicle sharing and rental services. Our client serves customers across multiple European markets with a fully white-label solution encompassing mobile apps, web applications, back-office tools, and integrations with telematics hardware, payment providers, and KYC systems—all from a single, modular codebase.
The platform runs on Java 17 / Jakarta EE 10 (Payara) on the backend and React / React Native on the frontend. As they enter a strategic growth phase, our talent team is seeking an experienced Tech Lead to help shape the next chapter of their technical evolution.
This is a bridge role between engineering and leadership. You'll work closely with the CTO, taking on operational responsibilities and ensuring the platform scales both technically and organizationally. This position suits someone who can dive deep into code while maintaining the bigger picture—someone who sees opportunity in evolving systems rather than obstacles.
Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Develop and maintain the modular Java/Jakarta EE platform with co-responsibility for architecture decisions
- Implement identified infrastructure improvements: IaC (Terraform / CloudFormation), multi-region setup, disaster recovery planning
- Execute outstanding security measures and drive migration of binary data from MongoDB to S3
- Evaluate and enhance CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI) and test coverage
- Lead technical debt reduction initiatives
Process & Team Organization
- Establish formal code review processes and consistent planning cycles within the development team
- Collaborate closely with the CTO on gradual handover of engineering and operational responsibilities
- Support building product management processes aligned with customer requirements
- Mentor junior frontend developers and support senior engineers
Operations & Quality
- Share responsibility for monitoring, alerting, and incident response (AWS CloudWatch, Sentry, Crashlytics)
- Optimize Sentry configuration to reduce noise and improve observability
- Automate dependency vulnerability scanning in CI pipelines
- Support customer projects on the technical side—from onboarding through troubleshooting
What We're Looking For
Must-Have Experience
- Multiple years of backend development experience with Java (Jakarta EE / Java EE / Spring) in production systems
- Strong experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and a commitment to software craftsmanship
- Proven experience as a Tech Lead or Senior Engineer with team responsibility
- Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS (EC2, ECS, CloudWatch, S3)
- Experience with MongoDB or comparable NoSQL databases in production environments
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or similar) and modern deployment practices
- Hands-on mentality: ability to deliver immediate value without extensive onboarding periods
Valuable Additional Skills
- Knowledge of Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or CloudFormation)
- Experience with React and/or React Native
- Understanding of mobility, car-sharing, or rental domains
- Experience in regulated environments or GDPR compliance projects
- Knowledge of telematics hardware integrations or IoT-adjacent systems
- Valid driver's license (Class B)
