About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential tax advisory organization in München that is building the technical foundation for AI-driven professional services. This is a rare opportunity to architect and lead the engineering effort that transforms how structured regulatory work is delivered at scale.

Our client operates at the intersection of traditional professional services and modern automation. They work with several thousand mid-sized companies and are acquiring established advisory firms while building the technology layer that will make automation a core organizational capability. They have already automated their own annual financial statements with AI – now the challenge is scaling that capability across the entire platform.

As Tech Lead / CTO, you will own the complete technology architecture: the data integration layer, the agent infrastructure, and the control systems that ensure regulatory compliance. You will make the key architectural decisions, build the initial team, and stay in the code. You report directly to the founder, with decisions made in minutes rather than months.

Responsibilities

Build the Data and Agent Architecture

• Design and implement the data layer above legacy ERP systems, creating the foundation for AI-driven workflows while maintaining the existing system of record
• Choose and build the agent infrastructure including framework selection, orchestration, versioning, and observability
• Transform integrations from custom projects into a reusable capability – every new client connection should arrive as context, not as custom code
• Ensure reproducibility and audit trails: probabilistic reasoning where appropriate, deterministic calculations where required

Build Control and Evaluation Systems

• Create the control layer that allows certified professionals to review and approve agent decisions within seconds – showing version, source, and reasoning path
• Build evaluation frameworks using decades of audited, completed cases as the benchmark
• Ensure every system meets regulatory standards for professional services

Lead and Scale the Engineering Team

• Make all core architecture decisions: design patterns, technology stack, build-versus-buy choices
• Hire and lead your engineering team – budget for initial hires is approved, with hiring beginning in your first quarter
• Ensure every acquired firm lands on the same technical foundation so the platform scales with each acquisition
• Remain hands-on: commit code and conduct reviews yourself

Define Success Milestones

• 6 months: Architecture decided, one production use case running daily, first engineers hired
• 12 months: Multiple agentic workflows in operation, control layer validated in real audits, evaluation running against closed cases
• 24 months: Automation as an organizational capability, unified technical foundation across all firms, team shipping independently

What We're Looking For

Required Experience and Skills

• Proven track record building production systems as founding engineer, engineering lead, technical co-founder, or similar role
• Hands-on experience taking agentic AI systems into production and understanding their failure modes
• Experience integrating with resistant legacy systems: ERP platforms, banking backends, poorly documented APIs
• Strong production coding skills with AI as an everyday tool; technology decisions grounded in what you've built and learned from
• German language proficiency for working with local teams and clients
• Willingness to work in person in München – this architecture needs to be decided in a shared room, not distributed calls
• Self-driven quality standards; you ship excellent work because mediocrity bothers you, not because someone checks

Valued But Not Required

• Background in regulated industries where mistakes have consequences: fintech, banking technology, payments, or software for professional services
• Knowledge of accounting, tax, or German professional services software ecosystems
• Technical co-founders of exited or failed ventures explicitly encouraged; we assess contribution, not credentials

What This Role Is – and Isn't

• Building, not managing – you lead engineers and stay in the code
• Operating company context – you build for internal teams, not external software customers
• In-person in München – a team finding its standards needs shared space, not remote coordination

Pay

This role offers multiple compensation bands based on experience level:

5+ years of relevant experience: €156,000 – €205,000 fixed salary, plus equity participation and €55,000 – €60,000 performance bonus potential

3-5 years of relevant experience: €105,000 – €140,000 fixed salary, plus equity participation and €30,000 – €40,000 performance bonus potential

Compensation bands reflect track record and market value for the specific profile, not negotiation range. Performance bonuses are assessed quarterly based on impact, judgment, communication, execution, growth, and values. Expected bonus at good performance levels is approximately 50% of maximum; full bonus represents exceptional contribution.
