Staff Software Engineer, Real-Time Systems

About This Role

We are representing a confidential defense technology organization that is building advanced autonomous systems at unprecedented scale. Our talent team is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Real-Time Systems to architect backend infrastructure for commanding and coordinating large-scale autonomous aerial networks.

This is a remote opportunity for an engineer who wants to work on genuinely hard distributed systems problems. You won't be building typical CRUD APIs—you'll be designing real-time coordination systems for heterogeneous autonomous assets operating under intermittent connectivity, high-throughput telemetry pipelines, and infrastructure that pushes the boundaries of what exists in the industry today.

Responsibilities

• Architect backend systems for real-time command and control of autonomous aerial networks
• Build distributed, collaborative infrastructure that maintains coordination across large numbers of assets, even when communications degrade
• Design and implement services that ingest, process, and distribute dense vehicle telemetry, sensor data, scheduling, crew resources, and data link management
• Own backend features end to end, from initial design through production deployment
• Ship iteratively with strong CI/CD, QA, and DevSecOps practices
• Solve novel problems in a problem space with limited prior art

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience
• 6+ years building complex backend systems with deep distributed systems expertise
• Strong instincts and proven experience with reliability, performance, and scalability
• Track record building and operating production backend services and APIs at scale
• Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State (ITAR requirement)

Preferred:

• Experience with real-time and event-driven distributed systems
• Track record with performance-sensitive, high-throughput application development
• Familiarity with messaging and streaming protocols
• Experience operating systems under degraded or intermittent connectivity
• Background with geospatial data or applications
