Staff Software Backend Engineer, Tech Lead – Foundations

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential B2B SaaS organization in search of a Staff Software Backend Engineer, Tech Lead - Foundations. This role will technically lead a platform team responsible for building shared infrastructure primitives that enable the entire engineering organization—including core services for authentication, access control, secrets management, and telemetry.

You will own the technical direction for the Foundations team. While the Engineering Manager owns people and process, you will drive architecture and technical execution. This is a leadership role for an engineer who thrives in ambiguity and enjoys building the foundational systems that others depend on.

Location: UK or USA (remote options available)

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture of the platform authorization service and other identity and access control systems
• Set technical direction for authentication, SSO, access control, and secrets management services
• Lead delivery of core platform services including login, authorization, and multi-tenancy
• Act as the primary technical decision maker for the Foundations team
• Lead and mentor engineers through daily technical work without formal management authority
• Partner with Engineering and Product Management on execution and roadmap alignment
• Drive core components from development through general availability launch
• Define API contracts for platform services consumed by delivery and application teams
• Set engineering standards for code review, testing, and documentation

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 7+ years of software development experience with technical ownership of a platform or infrastructure area
• 3+ years in a B2B software startup or high-growth organization
• Direct experience building authentication and authorization systems (OAuth, SSO, RBAC, or similar)
• Proven ability to lead engineering work and influence without formal authority
• Backend programming proficiency in Python and Go
• Experience designing APIs for internal engineering consumers
• Strong fundamentals in Linux and distributed systems
• Track record of making sound technical decisions under ambiguity

Nice to Have:

• Experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration
• Background in network management or infrastructure software
• Open-source contributions or community involvement
• Comfort with AI-enhanced development tooling
