Staff Engineer (IT Automation & AI-native Transformation)

Responsibilities

We are representing a fast-growing European SaaS organization in their search for a Staff Engineer to lead IT automation and AI-native transformation. This is a unique opportunity to solve cutting-edge problems that few organizations have tackled at scale.

You will architect and build a next-generation toolchain that fuses traditional automation and productivity platforms with spec-driven design and agentic workflows. Starting with IT and Security as a test bed, you'll iterate based on real-world feedback, then mentor and enable early adopter teams across the organization. Your goal is to build self-sustaining cultural practices that scale automation and AI capabilities company-wide.

In this role, you will:

• Design and implement hybrid architectures that balance foundation models and agentic working with traditional automation tools
• Drive the evolution of IT operations toward an all-encompassing infrastructure-as-code model through hands-on architecture and design
• Enable and protect citizen builders to safely use AI-agents and self-built automation at scale
• Mentor the existing IT engineering team and serve as a technical guide to accelerate skills transfer across departments
• Champion cross-departmental adoption of shared automation and AI platforms, breaking down operational silos
• Contribute to a build-not-buy IT and Security operating model

What We're Looking For

Our client needs a visionary builder and systems thinker who has operated at Staff Engineer level in a cloud-native, high-growth SaaS environment. The ideal candidate brings hands-on coding experience, ideally from platform or SRE teams, with a proven track record of AI-native adoption beyond experimental prompts into production-grade automated workflows.

Required qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience as a Staff Engineer in an established, successful SaaS scale-up
• Hands-on builder background with expertise in platform or SRE work; IT experience is secondary to strong building capabilities
• Track record of moving AI workflows from experimentation to robust, production-grade automation or agents
• Deep technical mastery in infrastructure-as-code, modern CI/CD systems, and enterprise workflow orchestration platforms
• Pragmatic engineering mindset: ability to design hybrid architectures that balance agentic working flexibility with cost efficiency
• Strong leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills; ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and citizen coders
• Systems thinking approach: instinctively breaking down complex problems into manageable components

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and are competitive for Staff Engineer roles in the European SaaS market.
