About the Role
The Unified Gateway serves as the central connection point for API requests across DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo platforms. You'll develop the middleware layer that bridges client requests (JSON/REST from mobile and web applications) with backend services (gRPC and Protocol Buffer–based). The platform manages critical cross-cutting concerns including identity verification, access control, request transformation, encryption, and fault recovery.
Core Duties
- Engineer scalable systems architected for reliability, performance, and long-term maintainability
- Increase gateway throughput, fault recovery capabilities, security posture, and overall scalability
- Establish patterns and standards around service mesh, topology awareness, circuit breaking, and self-healing
- Expand the platform's user base by supporting adoption across engineering teams
- Investigate and resolve production incidents in high-traffic systems
- Research new tools and frameworks to strengthen the platform's capabilities
- Use modern code assistance platforms as part of your daily development workflow
What We're Looking For
- Minimum 2 years of experience in backend systems, distributed platform infrastructure, or internal tooling
- Working knowledge of gRPC, HTTP/REST, Protocol Buffer schema, and microservice communication patterns
- Strong background in Kotlin or comparable JVM-based languages for reliable, high-volume applications (familiarity with reactive frameworks like Vert.x is beneficial)
- Production experience with systems handling substantial request volume and strict uptime requirements
- Understanding of distributed system design including data consistency, failure modes, request distribution, and recovery patterns
- Hands-on experience with API gateway functionality: user authentication, role-based access control, traffic routing, and service contracts (OpenAPI/Swagger)
- Passion for infrastructure-level solutions that remove friction for many downstream engineering teams
- Experience using AI-powered code editors throughout your development process: initial design, coding, quality assurance, logging, and deployment
