About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential healthcare technology organization in their search for a Software Developer Manager based in Canada. Our client develops mission-critical medical imaging solutions that directly impact patient care delivery across healthcare providers globally.
This leadership role combines technical expertise with people management, overseeing a team of software engineers who build and maintain regulated healthcare applications. You'll partner with cross-functional teams to deliver secure, compliant software that meets stringent healthcare regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a software development team through coaching, mentorship, performance management, and career development while maintaining high standards for code quality, testing, and documentation
- Drive technical execution and delivery of software features aligned with product roadmaps, ensuring adherence to engineering practices, architectural standards, and healthcare compliance requirements (HIPAA, FDA, DICOM, HL7)
- Collaborate with Product Management, Quality Assurance, Technical Support, and other development teams to ensure clear requirements, effective prioritization, and smooth delivery that meets customer needs
- Establish and maintain rigorous processes for code review, testing, traceability, deployment, monitoring, and incident response to ensure operational excellence and regulatory compliance for production systems
- Contribute to technical strategy and continuous improvement by evaluating emerging technologies including agentic AI tooling, and identifying opportunities to improve development processes and team effectiveness
- May participate in on-call rotation for production support of critical healthcare systems
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Development, or related technical field, or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of software development experience with at least 2 years in a leadership or team lead capacity
- Demonstrated track record leading delivery teams and improving throughput or cycle time
- Experience leading combined development and QA teams within an Agile framework
- Proven ability to coach and develop developers, providing constructive feedback and supporting career growth
- Hands-on experience using agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) against a production codebase
- Ability to establish team-level standards, guardrails, review expectations, and quality gates for AI-assisted development
- Understanding of architecture, design, and regulatory considerations for client-server, SaaS, and cloud-based solutions
- Strong knowledge of programming languages, operating systems (Linux/UNIX), and databases
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with ability to convey technical issues to diverse stakeholders
- Experience with quality assurance practices including code reviews, testing strategies, and continuous integration
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field
- Experience in healthcare technology, medical devices, or other regulated industries, including quality management systems (FDA, HIPAA, ISO 13485, ISO 9001)
- Knowledge of medical imaging technologies including PACS, RIS, DICOM, HL7, FHIR, or IHE integration standards
- Experience with cloud technologies, distributed systems, or microservices architectures, including AWS services
- Java background
- Experience managing remote or distributed teams, including coordinating offshore or vendor-augmented teams
- Professional release management practices
- Familiarity with complex, multi-threaded client/server architectures and database-enabled applications
Additional Requirements:
- Occasional travel (up to 10%) for team meetings, customer engagements, and industry conferences
- May require security clearance or background checks depending on customer contracts
