Site Reliability Engineer -Openstack (m/w/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential cloud infrastructure organization based in Cologne, Germany. Our client is building a modern on-premise cloud platform and seeks an experienced Site Reliability Engineer to help architect, operate, and evolve their OpenStack-based infrastructure. You'll work within a small, senior team with significant influence over platform architecture, automation strategy, and AI-assisted engineering practices.

This is a hands-on role where you'll take ownership of compute lifecycle management, infrastructure automation, and platform reliability—all while leveraging modern AI-assisted development workflows as part of daily engineering practice.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop OpenStack-based on-premise cloud infrastructure with the goal of highly automated deployment and operations on bare metal
• Build and operate Infrastructure as Code using Ansible and Terraform, along with Kubernetes and GitOps workflows (FluxCD/ArgoCD), supported by LLM-assisted development and automated testing
• Own the complete compute infrastructure lifecycle—from bare metal provisioning, firmware management, and hardware diagnostics through hypervisors, migrations, host evacuations, graceful drains, and capacity rebalancing
• Develop self-healing strategies and AI-assisted operational workflows, including structured knowledge bases, agentic workflows for incident triage and capacity planning, and progressive automation of runbooks
• Design and implement tests for non-regression, performance, and security; document solutions and continuously improve the platform based on telemetry, operational experience, and user feedback
• Serve as a technical point of contact and advisor for colleagues on automation, platform engineering, and AI-assisted tooling

What We're Looking For

• Several years of hands-on experience as an SRE, Platform Engineer, or DevOps Engineer operating production infrastructure
• Strong expertise with OpenStack, Kubernetes, and Linux in bare metal environments
• End-to-end experience operating compute infrastructure: firmware/BIOS rollouts, bare metal provisioning, hardware diagnostics, hypervisors, migrations, host evacuations, graceful drains, and capacity rebalancing
• Proficiency with Ansible, Terraform, and GitOps workflows (FluxCD or ArgoCD) in production environments
• Experience with Go and/or Python, plus AI-assisted coding environments such as Claude Code, Cursor, Aider, or similar agentic tools
• Practical knowledge of observability, networking, compute tuning, auto-remediation, security-critical infrastructure, and multi-site cloud environments
• AI-assisted engineering as part of your daily workflow—you understand where LLMs and agentic tools add real value and where deep engineering expertise remains essential
• Strong ownership mindset with a passion for continuous improvement; ability to work autonomously while sharing knowledge effectively
• Comfortable working in English within an international team environment for technical discussions, documentation, and collaboration
