Senior System Engineer (m/w/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential public-sector organization in Germany seeking a Senior System Engineer for a strategic firewall automation project. This remote-friendly engagement runs from October 17, 2026 through December 31, 2026, with occasional on-site presence required in Bonn or Nuremberg.

Location: Remote within Germany (40 days remote / 5 days on-site)

Project Language: German

Security Clearance: Willingness to obtain SÜ2 clearance per § 9 SÜG (confidential/sabotage protection) is required

Responsibilities

• Develop and enhance a proprietary firewall automation platform that manages firewall rule requests, revalidation, and deletion workflows
• Review existing architecture and prepare concrete improvement recommendations
• Build user interfaces within existing applications to streamline firewall rule administration
• Implement automated deployment pipelines that store firewall rules in repositories for cloud deployment
• Design algorithms and visual topology representations to optimize firewall configurations while maintaining traceability to original requestors
• Integrate handoff mechanisms to deployment agents and process their feedback
• Break down project work into Jira stories for independent execution by the engineering team

What We're Looking For

• Minimum 2 years proven experience with Python and FastAPI – project references required
• Minimum 2 years working with OpenAPI specifications – project references required
• Minimum 2 years using Mermaid for diagram generation – project references required
• Minimum 2 years with GitLab and CI/CD pipelines – project references required
• Minimum 2 years developing with Node.js, Vue.js, Vite, Tailwind CSS, and Material Design – project references required
• Minimum 2 years practicing Scrum methodology and working in Jira – project references required
• Minimum 2 years in firewall environments with demonstrated knowledge of firewall architecture and rule management
• Fluency in German for daily project communication
• Legal authorization to work in Germany and eligibility for security clearance
