About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential SaaS organization seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to join their engineering team in Cambridge, England. This is a hands-on role with genuine autonomy over CI/CD pipelines, deployment architecture, and Kubernetes migration strategy. You'll work embedded within engineering teams, optimizing delivery across their on-premise infrastructure while serving as a key stakeholder in rolling out their modern Kubernetes platform.
This isn't a ticket-processing role—you'll shape how engineering ships value to production safely and rapidly, with real impact on platform maturity and deployment practices.
Responsibilities
- Utilize and contribute to Ansible-based deployment automation for seamless feature releases, adhering to peer-review processes
- Monitor application-level health within clusters and collaborate on incident response and post-mortems for engineering-led deployments
- Maintain deployment runbooks, documentation, and developer self-service guides to streamline onboarding and releases
- Act as the engineering stakeholder in platform design, collaborating with TechOps to shape self-service workflows, guardrails, and standards for Kubernetes primitives (Gateway API, RBAC, admission controllers, resource policies)
- Standardize application-level configurations for ingress, RBAC, namespacing strategy, and secrets management within Kubernetes
- Drive phased application migrations to Kubernetes, partnering with teams to containerize and migrate workloads starting with non-critical environments
- Build robust CI/CD workflows for Kubernetes deployments using Helm, Kustomize, ArgoCD or similar, with automated guardrails for safe code delivery
- Implement application-level metrics, logging, and alerting to ensure engineering teams have visibility into workload health
- Create comprehensive developer documentation including runbooks, manifest templates, and best practices for safe self-service
What We're Looking For
Must-Have:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills—ability to collaborate openly and communicate clearly on complex technical projects
- Strong, demonstrable experience with Ansible: roles, inventories, vault, and idempotency
- Production experience with Docker and Docker Compose
- Understanding of networking fundamentals
- Strong scripting ability in Bash and Python
- Experience with GitOps tooling such as ArgoCD or Flux
- Experience with observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Alertmanager or equivalent)
- Ability to think creatively within constraints and plan pragmatically—delivering iteratively while working with existing infrastructure and roadmapping toward ideal states
- Methodical, security-conscious approach to platform engineering
Nice-to-Have:
- Familiarity with Helm chart authoring and management
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform (even in on-prem contexts)
- Experience with secrets management tooling (HashiCorp Vault, Sealed Secrets, External Secrets Operator)
- Prior experience balancing greenfield work alongside BAU responsibilities
The Right Mindset:
- Comfortable being the go-to person during incidents, but also comfortable prioritizing properly when it's not urgent
- Can hold your own in conversations with software engineers, network engineers, and senior leadership—even when priorities differ
- Treat documentation as part of the job, not an afterthought—you write runbooks and diagrams proactively
- Have opinions about best practices but remain pragmatic, knowing when to choose the right tool versus the perfect tool
- Demonstrate initiative and autonomously drive outcomes rather than waiting for direction
