Senior Engineering Manager – Enterprise Trust & Reliability

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential EdTech organization seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead their Enterprise Trust & Reliability function in London. This is a first-of-its-kind leadership role where you'll define engineering management practice from the ground up, managing approximately seven engineers across two critical technical groups that make enterprise adoption possible.

This newly formed function brings together commercial integrations and operational reliability—the two areas where enterprise buyers make or break adoption decisions. You'll report directly to the Single Threaded Leader for the function and shape technical direction, delivery rhythm, hiring standards, and on-call practices.

Responsibilities

You'll own delivery, technical direction, and team health across two engineering groups:

• Lead engineers across both teams: Line-manage approximately seven engineers with responsibility for growth plans, coaching, performance management, and wellbeing to a high standard
• Own delivery and technical direction: Partner with tech leads on architecture decisions and maintain standards for design, review, and shipping across two distinct technical domains
• Build the team: Fill open positions using structured interviewing including live technical assessments, and maintain a high bar as the team scales
• Drive AI-native operations: Lead teams using agentic tooling and modern development practices, with tighter discovery-to-build-to-review loops
• Own operational backbone: Ensure healthy on-call rotations, robust incident management practices, and clear communication when issues arise
• Manage Commercial Tech & Integrations: Oversee the team building APIs, CRM integrations, customer onboarding systems, and third-party platform connections that pass enterprise security reviews
• Manage Stability & Operations: Lead the team responsible for incident management, SLOs, error budgets, observability, DORA metrics, and the on-call rotation

What We're Looking For

Essential requirements:

• Proven engineering management experience: Track record of managing engineers building and running production systems, with clear examples of teams grown, delivery owned, and performance decisions made
• Technical breadth across both domains: Strong working knowledge of integration and API design, identity/SSO, third-party systems, reliability engineering, observability, incident response, and SLOs—able to steer design reviews, challenge estimates, and make informed build-versus-buy decisions
• Delivery through ambiguity: Experience keeping teams shipping effectively when organizational structure is evolving, balancing pace, quality, and people development
• People development focus: Demonstrated success coaching, mentoring, and leveling up engineers, with genuine commitment to people leadership as the core of the role
• AI-native approach: Active use of AI tooling in daily work and expectation that your engineers do the same, with ability to distinguish AI-assisted productivity from poor quality output
• London-based: This role requires collaboration in the office three days per week

This role is not suitable if: You prefer to remain primarily hands-on writing code, or view management as a stepping stone rather than the work itself.
