About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential marketplace technology client seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to join their team in Sydney, Australia. This is a hybrid leadership role where you'll oversee multiple high-performing engineering teams, leading through Engineering Managers and Tech Leads to deliver meaningful business outcomes.

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you'll operate beyond the single-team level, setting technical and delivery direction while developing the leaders beneath you. You'll connect engineering execution to commercial strategy and help teams build reliable, high-quality systems that are continuously improving.

A distinctive aspect of this role is shaping how engineering operates in an AI-native environment, treating AI-augmented delivery and evolving team models as core operational levers.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coach Engineering Managers and Tech Leads, holding them accountable for team health, delivery quality, and technical excellence
• Own technical and architectural direction across your domain, ensuring designs are coherent, fit for purpose, and aligned to engineering standards
• Set the engineering quality bar across CI/CD, testing, observability, security, incident response, and operational health
• Partner with senior Product and Design peers to shape domain strategy and ensure engineering effort creates maximum customer and commercial impact
• Own end-to-end delivery across multiple teams, including planning, execution, dependencies, risk management, and measurable outcomes
• Build and maintain a technical roadmap that balances architecture, operational health, and feature delivery
• Identify and manage cross-team risks and dependencies early
• Ensure teams have clear, measurable OKRs that ladder up to coherent domain outcomes
• Lead AI-forward ways of working by helping teams understand how AI changes throughput, team composition, roles, skills, and product opportunities

What We're Looking For

• 6+ years of engineering leadership experience, including at least 3 years leading multiple teams or Engineering Managers, ideally in a product-led technology business
• Ability to lead delivery through outcomes rather than rigid process, comfortable applying modern agile principles at multi-team scale
• Strong technical foundation with the ability to earn respect from senior engineers, challenge architectural decisions, and make credible build/buy/defer recommendations
• Proven experience developing Engineering Managers (not just individual engineers) and multiplying impact through leadership development
• Experience navigating the shift to AI-augmented engineering and understanding how AI changes team composition, throughput expectations, and engineering craft
• Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical complexity into business stakes for senior stakeholders
• Commercial judgement that connects engineering investment to customer and business outcomes
• Comfort with ruthless prioritization when resources are constrained and clear articulation of trade-offs
