About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential fintech organization in their search for a Head of Engineering, Rewards. This is a remote role based in London, reporting to senior technology leadership.
Our client operates a rewards and retention platform serving millions of users across consumer, business, and distribution networks. The platform currently delivers cashback functionality and is being evolved into a comprehensive rewards, retention, engagement, and personalization system. You will inherit a team of nine engineers, including an Engineering Manager, and scale the organization to multiple product units with upwards of 25 people.
This is a consumer-facing product engineering role requiring hands-on leadership in experimentation, A/B testing, and mobile/web experience development. You will own the technical strategy, architecture, and delivery end-to-end as the domain CTO, with full autonomy over engineering decisions, hiring, and roadmap prioritization.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for the rewards platform end-to-end
- Improve performance, reliability, and depth of the existing cashback product as immediate priority
- Evolve the platform to serve business customers, consumer customers, and sales agents with personalized rewards and retention features
- Build and scale the engineering organization: structure product units, hire engineers and Engineering Managers, and lead through managers as the team grows
- Establish a strong experimentation culture using A/B testing, cohort analysis, and measurement frameworks to drive product decisions
- Partner with Growth, Sales, and Marketing to translate acquisition and retention objectives into engineering initiatives
- Own the customer-facing experience across mobile and web, including delivery speed and reliability
- Define architecture standards, engineering processes, quality metrics, and own domain health (incidents, production defects, deployment frequency, change failure rate, developer experience)
- Build the platform to serve customers across multiple geographies as the organization expands
- Work with Product to define rewards-specific metrics and OKRs and hold the team accountable to them
What We're Looking For
- Direct-to-consumer product engineering at scale: proven experience building and shipping products used by large consumer audiences with understanding of engagement and retention drivers
- Genuine front-end and mobile depth: hands-on leadership building consumer-facing mobile and web experiences (backend-only backgrounds do not fit this role)
- Experimentation and growth engineering: hands-on experience running A/B tests, feature flagging, and measurement frameworks to drive product decisions
- At least 5 years managing managers and leading engineering organizations through other engineering leaders
- Hands-on technical leadership with meaningful engineering time and technical credibility with your teams
- 10+ years overall software engineering experience, with at least 5 years leading engineering teams through growth phases
- Comfort with Java and Spring Boot backend environments and ability to lead backend engineers credibly
- Experience building and scaling engineering organizations from small bases, including hiring and developing Engineering Managers
- Strong collaboration with commercial stakeholders (growth, marketing, sales) and ability to translate business objectives into engineering work
- Rewards, loyalty, gamification, personalization, or growth platform experience is a strong advantage
- Fintech or payments experience is an advantage but not required
