The City and County of San Francisco is seeking a Senior Building Inspector for its Public Works department to oversee project delivery and construction compliance. This is a full-time position based in San Francisco, CA, US.
About This Position
In this role, you will lead inspection and compliance activities across public works construction projects throughout the city. You'll work at the intersection of code enforcement, quality assurance, and project management—ensuring that construction meets all applicable standards and is completed safely and on schedule. This position requires deep knowledge of building codes and the ability to communicate technical requirements effectively to diverse stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections of public works construction projects at multiple phases, from site preparation through final closeout
- Verify compliance with the California Building Code, San Francisco Building and Construction Ordinances, and project specifications
- Document inspection results and prepare reports detailing code compliance status, deficiencies, and corrective actions
- Serve as technical liaison between project teams, contractors, and city departments to resolve construction issues
- Mentor and supervise junior inspectors, providing guidance on inspection procedures and code interpretation
- Schedule and coordinate inspections with contractors and project management teams
- Maintain accurate records of all inspections, test results, and project correspondence
Qualifications
- Substantial experience as a building inspector or in construction oversight and quality assurance
- Comprehensive knowledge of California Building Code and San Francisco municipal building standards
- Strong understanding of construction practices, materials, and worker safety protocols
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities
- Professional certification or equivalent experience demonstrating inspection expertise
- Strong analytical and written communication skills for detailed technical reporting
- Valid California driver's license and ability to travel to construction sites throughout San Francisco
