Senior Accountant (m/w/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential cleantech organization seeking a Senior Accountant to build a professional, scalable, and audit-ready accounting function alongside the Head of Finance. You will contribute expertise in financial accounting, tax, year-end closing, and process design while driving knowledge structuring, process standardization, and automation. Over time, you will assume leadership of the accounting team.

Accounting & Financial Closing:

• Perform and continuously improve ongoing financial accounting operations
• Prepare and quality-assure monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements under German HGB standards
• Handle accounting, valuation, and accrual topics
• Execute and review account reconciliations
• Ensure complete and compliant bookkeeping

Tax & Compliance:

• Manage domestic and international VAT matters
• Support tax-related inquiries
• Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements
• Serve as point of contact for tax advisors and auditors

Process Optimization & Digitalization:

• Analyze and enhance existing accounting processes
• Build and document an accounting manual
• Implement efficient closing and control processes
• Advance the system landscape including ERP and accounting software
• Identify and execute automation opportunities

Audit & Governance:

• Prepare for and support annual financial audits
• Establish a robust internal control system
• Ensure high data and financial statement quality
• Participate in investor, banking, and due diligence requests

Leadership & Development:

• Provide technical development for the existing accounting team
• Transfer knowledge and coach less experienced colleagues
• Assume technical and eventual managerial leadership of financial accounting

What We're Looking For

• Successfully completed training as a certified accountant (Bilanzbuchhalter), tax specialist (Steuerfachwirt), or degree in accounting, finance, or tax
• Minimum 5 years of relevant accounting experience, ideally in a mid-sized company, scale-up, or audit firm
• Strong knowledge of German HGB accounting standards and proven experience preparing annual financial statements
• Solid understanding of VAT law and experience supporting financial audits
• Proficiency in DATEV and experience with ERP systems; knowledge of Odoo is advantageous
• High technical confidence and independent work style with ability to actively build structures and processes
• Pragmatism combined with high quality standards
• Hands-on mentality and enthusiasm for working in a dynamic growth environment
• Strong communication skills, team orientation, and enjoyment of knowledge transfer and employee development
• Fluency in German is required for this role
