Principal Photonics Architect

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential engineering consultancy seeking a Principal Photonics Architect to lead the development of advanced photonic and optoelectronic systems. In this role, you will set the technical vision and define architectures for next-generation photonic integrated circuits and optical systems, guiding projects from initial concept through design, integration, and final validation.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

• Leading multidisciplinary teams in delivering photonic integrated circuits and complete photonic systems, maintaining ownership of architecture from concept to validated hardware
• Overseeing design, simulation, tape-out, integration and testing activities while establishing best practices across projects
• Managing technical relationships with foundries, packaging providers, and optics partners to ensure successful execution
• Collaborating closely with electronic, mechanical, and software engineering teams to translate ambitious concepts into robust, manufacturable hardware
• Driving training, upskilling initiatives and resource planning to expand internal photonics capabilities
• Contributing to strategic direction and mentoring emerging talent within the photonics practice

What We're Looking For

Our client requires a senior-level photonics professional with proven experience in:

• Leading the specification, design, fabrication, testing and validation of complex photonic integrated circuits or photonic systems
• Hands-on photonic design and simulation using tools such as Lumerical, Ansys, Synopsys or equivalent platforms
• PIC layout experience with tools like Synopsys, Luceda, Nazca or similar
• Active engagement with the photonics ecosystem including fabrication facilities, packaging providers, and testing partners
• Deep technical knowledge of PIC platforms including silicon photonics, silicon nitride, indium phosphide, along with integration methods and test strategies
• Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams, make critical technical trade-offs, and collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines

Preferred additional experience:

• Photonic or optical compute technologies
• High-speed PICs for datacoms applications
• Free-space optical communication systems
