About This Opportunity
We are representing a leading French research and engineering institution seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a 12-month contract focused on the development of selective sensors for toxic gaseous agents. This position is based in Saint-Étienne, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France, and offers an exceptional opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge materials science research with direct industrial applications.
Our client operates at the intersection of academic excellence and industrial innovation, specializing in process engineering applied to divided solids. The research center where you'll work is recognized for its expertise in supporting industrial partners through digital and environmental transitions.
Responsibilities
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be integrated into a multidisciplinary research department focused on solid transformation processes and instrumentation. Your core responsibilities include:
- Developing gas sensors based on functional materials through systematic experimentation and optimization
- Depositing sensitive materials onto electrode-equipped substrates and optimizing this process for reproducible characterizations
- Conducting electrical characterizations under complex gaseous atmospheres using controlled pollutant generation test benches
- Evaluating sensor stability, sensitivity to various gases, and selectivity to specific target gases
- Performing gas testing under simple atmospheres initially, progressing to more representative real-environment conditions
- Conducting adsorption studies using chemisorption equipment to investigate solid-gas interactions
- Analyzing detection, capture, and treatment mechanisms to advance scientific understanding
- Collaborating with partner researchers responsible for sensitive material synthesis and sensor integration into wearable applications
What We're Looking For
Our client seeks a PhD holder with strong expertise in materials science and sensor characterization:
- Required: PhD (doctorate) in Engineering Sciences, Chemistry, or Materials Science
- Highly desirable experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Shaping organic or ceramic materials via wet processing methods
- Electrical or electrochemical property measurements
- Gas sensor characterization
- Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret complex experimental data
- Experience with materials deposition techniques and optimization protocols
- Ability to work collaboratively across multiple research groups
- Fluency in French is expected given the location and collaborative nature of the work
Contract details: 12-month fixed-term contract (CDD) with anticipated start date of January 1, 2027. Application deadline: October 30, 2026.
