About the Role
As a Middle School Autism Teacher, you'll manage a specialized special education classroom focused on students with autism spectrum disorder. This certified, exempt position works within our Special Education Department to provide individualized, evidence-based instruction tailored to each student's unique strengths and developmental needs.
What You'll Do
- Design and deliver differentiated instructional programs aligned with each student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
- Create a structured, supportive classroom environment that promotes both academic growth and social-emotional development
- Assess student progress regularly and adjust teaching strategies to maximize learning outcomes
- Collaborate with special education staff, general education teachers, and school counselors to ensure consistent support across school settings
- Communicate frequently with families about student progress, challenges, and celebrations
- Implement behavior management and positive reinforcement strategies that build student independence and confidence
- Maintain detailed records and documentation required for special education compliance
- Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to student goal-setting and progress monitoring
What We're Looking For
- Active Kansas teaching certification with special education endorsement (autism or general special education)
- Demonstrated experience teaching students with autism or significant developmental disabilities
- Strong knowledge of autism spectrum characteristics and evidence-based instructional approaches
- Excellent communication skills and ability to build trust with families and colleagues
- Patience, creativity, and commitment to meeting students where they are
- Ability to manage a classroom with varying behavioral and academic needs
- Problem-solving mindset and willingness to adapt instruction based on student response
