Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential research organization based in Bochum that develops systems combining cameras, embedded computing, sensors, mechanics, and robotics. This is a part-time student position (50%) focused on hardware prototyping and mechatronics engineering.

You will develop and prototype hardware systems that bridge software and the physical world, with a particular focus on camera-based systems for computer vision and AI applications. These systems may range from laboratory prototypes to robust solutions designed for continuous operation in demanding environments.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Designing, building, and testing camera-based hardware systems
• Integrating embedded computing platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi, or comparable systems
• Programming and connecting sensors, cameras, microcontrollers, and electronic components
• Developing solutions for thermal management, ventilation, and condensation prevention
• Producing prototype components using 3D printing and rapid prototyping techniques
• Documenting hardware architectures, component selections, and technical decisions
• Collaborating closely with software, AI, and 3D development teams

What We're Looking For

Our client seeks a student with a background in mechatronics, electrical engineering, embedded systems, automation engineering, or a comparable technical field.

Required technical skills (experience with several of the following):

• Programming in C and/or C++ as well as Python
• Embedded systems and microcontrollers
• Linux-based systems
• Cameras and image acquisition
• 3D printing or other rapid-prototyping technologies

Most importantly, you should be comfortable combining software, electronics, and mechanics into working physical systems.

Additional valuable experience (not required):

• Machine vision
• Robotics, servo motors, and stepper motors
• PCB design
• Electronics prototyping
• Ruggedized electronics
• Thermal management of embedded systems

The ideal candidate enjoys building things and is comfortable moving from initial concepts to experimental setups, testing, identifying problems, and iteratively improving systems. You might spend one day programming an embedded computer, another testing camera and lens combinations, and the next designing and 3D-printing enclosures or mounting systems.

Personal or university projects involving robotics, electronics, embedded systems, drones, cameras, 3D printers, automation, or similar technologies are highly relevant. We value curiosity, technical creativity, structured problem-solving, and willingness to experiment.
