intent
intent is seeking a Head of Human Resources to take strategic ownership of all people operations in a fully remote environment. This is a comprehensive freelance contract role where you'll lead recruitment initiatives, build HR systems, manage a small people team, and partner directly with leadership on organizational strategy.
About the Role
As Head of Human Resources, you'll own the complete people function for a 60+ person design and hardware company creating connected devices and wearables since 2008. Your work will span recruitment strategy, operational execution, policy development, and leadership advisory—building sustainable people systems from the ground up rather than managing existing programs. You'll report to the CEO and have direct influence on how the company attracts talent, develops teams, and scales. This role sits at the intersection of business operations and strategic people planning, requiring someone who can think both tactically and long-term.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the People team including two recruiters and an office manager through regular check-ins, performance feedback, and skill development
- Plan and execute a recruiting roadmap aligned with business growth, managing approximately 50 hires annually across technical, leadership, and operational roles
- Develop recruitment methodologies, train hiring managers to interview effectively, and coordinate with external recruitment agencies and staffing partners
- Design and maintain onboarding, job shadowing, and offboarding experiences
- Partner with team leads on quarterly performance cycles, competency assessments, career development, and performance management conversations
- Navigate complex people situations including team conflicts, performance issues, and difficult separations
- Advise the executive team on hiring strategy, compensation design, organizational structure, and leadership succession
- Manage all HR operations including contractor agreements, employment contracts, leave tracking, payroll coordination, and compliance reporting
- Create and evolve all people policies covering leave, work equipment, remote work guidelines, recruitment standards, incentive programs, and offboarding
- Maintain vendor partnerships including healthcare providers, legal counsel, payroll services, and training organizations
- Track and analyze recruitment metrics, retention data, and headcount efficiency to inform leadership recommendations
- Champion people initiatives including wellness programs, mentoring frameworks, feedback systems, and organizational development projects
- Ensure compliance with labor regulations, handle security audits like ISO 27001 certification, and manage system access across platforms
- Incorporate AI tools into daily workflows to increase efficiency and decision-making quality
What We're Looking For
- Demonstrated experience leading full-cycle recruitment for 40+ annual hires, ideally in technical or growth-stage companies
- Proven ability to build and lead HR or People teams and develop their capabilities
- Deep knowledge of HR operations including employment contracts, leave administration, payroll processes, and compliance frameworks
- Comfort with difficult conversations, conflict resolution, and sensitive personnel matters
- Strategic mindset: you see people functions as core to business strategy, not as support overhead
- Operational excellence: ability to own systems, processes, and metrics end-to-end
- Experience in fully remote environments and comfort with async, distributed teams
- Familiarity with HR software and recruitment platforms; comfort learning new tools quickly
- Willingness to use AI tools as part of your daily workflow to solve problems faster
- Fluency in English for communication with a global leadership team
