Senior QA Engineer (freelance)

intent is hiring a Senior QA Engineer (freelance) for its fully remote connected devices team. This role is a freelance engagement with the potential to evolve into a permanent, full-time position after an initial probationary period, depending on project needs and mutual fit.

The Opportunity

Since 2008, intent has designed and co-created connected devices for leading brands—wearables, smart audio, and health-tech solutions for clients including Oura and BOSE. As a 60+ person fully remote company backed by investors like a16z and Founders Fund, we tackle the complex intersection of mobile applications, firmware, and physical hardware. In this role, you'll take ownership of quality assurance for products where mobile apps communicate with devices over wireless protocols, operate under real-world constraints, and must perform reliably at scale. This is testing that goes far deeper than screen validation: you'll investigate device interactions, sensor reliability, connectivity under variable conditions, and the edge cases that separate a polished product launch from a problematic rollout.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform compatibility testing across diverse devices, sensors, gateways, communication protocols, and mobile platforms to ensure seamless integration
• Execute functional testing focused on data collection, storage, processing, real-time monitoring, device control, and system integrations
• Conduct performance testing to identify bottlenecks and latency issues across different workloads, network conditions, and environmental scenarios
• Lead security testing efforts targeting potential vulnerabilities in device firmware, communication protocols, data transmission, storage, authentication, and access controls
• Mentor and develop junior testers, establishing and raising QA standards across the organization
• Participate actively in requirements discussions and daily team synchronization, identifying inconsistencies early
• Share expertise and contribute to QA best practices within the team and across the company
• Integrate AI tools into your daily testing workflow as a productivity multiplier

You bring substantial QA experience with hardware-connected mobile applications and demonstrate genuine ownership over the quality of systems you test. You're naturally skeptical—you ask "why" before accepting specifications, you read logs when something seems off, and you care about the entire product ecosystem, not just individual app features. You're AI-literate and treat modern tools as extensions of your thinking, not novelties. You communicate directly and transparently, flag problems early, and thrive in fully remote environments with flexible working hours. You're comfortable navigating ambiguity and testing scenarios where network connectivity is unreliable, battery constraints matter, and real-world conditions don't match the lab.

About intent

intent operates as a fully remote company with optional office spaces in Warsaw and Gdansk for those who prefer collaborative environments. Our working rhythm centers around 10:00–18:00 CET, with occasional evening calls with US-based clients. You'll participate in both a dedicated QA chapter for knowledge-sharing and a project-focused squad led by a product manager.
