Founding Tech Lead (Dual Use Defence & Health-tech) – Tricorder

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential healthcare technology venture building deployable clinical infrastructure for field, transit, and remote care environments. Our client is developing rugged hardware and software platforms that enable clinical teams to capture and monitor patient data in challenging conditions where traditional connectivity and power cannot be assumed.

This is a founding Tech Lead position with significant equity participation. You will join an established CEO and work through a structured six-month build programme supported by a technology studio, with backing from a major European industrial partner providing hardware capabilities and R&D resources.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end system integration spanning sensing hardware, edge computing, and data synchronization layers
• Design resilient architectures for intermittent connectivity and constrained power environments
• Ensure alignment with medical device regulations, data protection standards, and quality management frameworks
• Deliver functional prototypes for clinical pilots and investor demonstrations
• Define the initial technology stack and make pragmatic architectural decisions under uncertainty
• Recruit and lead the initial engineering team as the organization scales
• Collaborate with the CEO on product direction, pilot deployments, and technical documentation for funding rounds

What We're Looking For

Essential experience:

• Proven track record shipping real products spanning both physical devices and software, from prototype through production deployment
• Deep technical expertise in one or more: embedded systems/firmware, sensors and signal acquisition, edge computing, or connected-device architecture
• Experience building in regulated, high-trust domains such as health-tech, medical devices, defence, or safety-critical fields
• Familiarity with clinical safety standards, data protection requirements, and medical-device quality management frameworks
• Ability to make effective build-versus-buy decisions and ship quickly despite ambiguity and incomplete information
• Founder mindset: comfort with ownership, equity compensation, and presenting technical vision to clinical users and investors
• Willingness and eligibility to undergo UK government security vetting

Valuable additional experience:

• Advanced knowledge of AI/ML for on-device inference or sensor fusion
• Founding engineer or early employee experience at technology startups
• Exposure to clinical, pre-hospital, emergency, humanitarian, or field-operations environments
• Practical knowledge of hardware manufacturing and certification processes
• Existing UK security clearance

This role requires someone who:

• Works comfortably across both hardware and software rather than specializing in only one domain
• Thrives in early-stage ambiguity without requiring mature organizational processes
• Prioritizes understanding users, constraints, and regulatory requirements before finalizing architecture
• Seeks genuine co-founder responsibility rather than a senior individual contributor or corporate leadership position

Compensation Structure

This position offers founder-level equity with standard vesting terms plus a stipend during the six-month studio build programme.
