Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Linux Kernel

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential open-source technology organization in their search for an Engineering Manager to lead Linux kernel development efforts. This is a unique opportunity for a senior engineer or tech lead ready to transition into full-time people management while working on operating system technology that powers millions of systems globally across cloud, enterprise, data science, AI, and IoT environments.

This is a fully remote position open to candidates worldwide. The organization operates with distributed teams across all time zones and supports work-from-home as the default model.

Responsibilities

• Transition from individual contribution or technical leadership into full-time people and project management
• Lead and mentor a globally distributed team of Linux kernel engineers
• Manage delivery, testing, and maintenance of kernel releases across cloud, server, desktop, and IoT platforms
• Drive engineering excellence, ensuring consistent code quality, security, and performance standards
• Develop and execute team strategies aligned with broader product roadmaps and company goals
• Collaborate with silicon vendors, cloud partners, and internal teams to enable new hardware and platform features
• Own release cycles and update cadence for kernel portfolios under your management
• Foster a culture of continuous learning, open-source collaboration, feedback, and accountability

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Proven experience as a Senior Software Engineer, Tech Lead, or similar role with demonstrated desire to move into formal management (no prior direct management experience required)
• Strong technical foundation in systems software, C programming, or operating systems concepts
• Experience with software packaging formats; direct experience with Ubuntu, Debian, or Snap packaging highly valued
• Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, guide complex technical projects, or drive architectural decisions
• Leadership potential with commitment to skills development and team mentorship
• Confidence to exchange feedback, speak up respectfully, and share ideas openly
• Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
• Ability to travel internationally twice yearly for company events (up to two weeks each)

Nice-to-have qualifications:

• Experience as scrum master, project lead, or informal mentor for remote teams
• Direct contributions to or participation in the Linux kernel community
• Familiarity with continuous integration and automated testing frameworks for systems software
• Direct Linux kernel or other operating system kernel development experience

Pay
