Engineering Manager – Java

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS organization seeking an experienced Engineering Manager with strong Java expertise to join their distributed engineering team in Bordeaux, France. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with people management, offering the opportunity to mentor developers while contributing to a modern microservices platform.

Responsibilities

• Drive technical excellence by taking ownership of user stories, conducting code reviews, and actively contributing to design, development, testing, and production deployments
• Coordinate cross-functional delivery by developing roadmaps with R&D, aligning priorities with other technical leads, and partnering with product and design teams
• Manage and mentor a team of 4-5 developers, conducting regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and fostering team cohesion across distributed locations
• Develop talent and establish best practices in clean code, testing, and pair programming while ensuring successful onboarding of new team members
• Remove technical blockers, make critical arbitration decisions, and ensure the team delivers on commitments with high velocity and quality
• Participate in the adoption of AI within products and internal engineering practices
• Contribute to recruitment efforts and talent identification within the team

What We're Looking For

Required Experience:

• Minimum 5 years of Java development experience with recent versions of the language
• At least 2 years in a team lead or similar management role with demonstrated experience mentoring developers
• Proven ability to balance hands-on technical contribution with people management responsibilities
• Track record of successfully delivering complex projects in a microservices environment
• Professional proficiency in English

Technical Skills:

• Deep expertise in Java development and architecture
• Experience with Spring Framework
• Strong SQL knowledge
• Familiarity with cloud platforms and microservices architecture
• Commitment to clean code and engineering best practices

Location: This position is based in Bordeaux, France, with one day of remote work per week.
