Engineering Manager | Applied AI

About This Opportunity

We are representing a fast-growing legal technology company in Germany that has built a production AI system already serving thousands of professional users daily. They need an Engineering Manager to lead their Applied AI function—owning the team, the technical roadmap, and the engineering standards that determine how AI capabilities reach end users.

This is a leadership role reporting to the Head of Engineering. Your leverage comes from the team you build and the technical decisions you make, not from writing code yourself. You'll be working in a domain where AI adoption is still emerging, which means the opportunity to set direction is significant and the margin for error is small.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership

• Build and mentor a high-performing AI engineering team; raise the bar on hiring and capability development
• Establish engineering standards for AI work including evaluation frameworks, testing protocols, observability, and delivery rhythm
• Own delivery at startup pace while maintaining the accuracy and reliability professional users require

Technical Direction and Roadmap

• Own the technical roadmap for AI capabilities: architecture decisions, agent frameworks, retrieval systems, evaluation and observability infrastructure
• Partner with product leadership to translate roadmap priorities into realistic technical plans and effort estimates
• Track developments in generative and agentic AI; filter signal from noise and turn insights into actionable technical decisions

Cross-Functional Impact

• Integrate AI features into production workflows in collaboration with design and engineering teams
• Serve as the AI technical authority across the organization; elevate AI fluency in non-technical teams
• Communicate complex AI concepts clearly to diverse audiences including executives, product managers, and domain experts

What We're Looking For

Leadership Experience

• Proven track record managing engineering teams with direct reports; specific examples of mentoring engineers to higher performance levels
• Ability to drive results through influence across product, domain experts, and peer teams
• Experience leading high-performing teams operating under real delivery pressure; judgment on prioritization and scope management

AI and Technical Depth

• At least 3 years at a company where generative or agentic AI is core to the product offering, not an add-on feature
• Direct leadership experience shipping agentic AI systems to production (prototypes and demos do not qualify)
• Deep technical fluency in retrieval quality, evaluation methodologies, observability tooling, and agent architecture; ability to identify over-engineered solutions

Location and Background

• Located within CET +/-2 time zones
• Preferred: formal background in AI or machine learning, experience migrating products from non-AI to AI-native architectures, hands-on familiarity with agent orchestration frameworks and observability platforms, or experience in legal tech or other regulated domains
