Engineering Manager

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential logistics technology company building the next generation of AI-powered freight operations software. This Engineering Manager role sits at the intersection of technical leadership and a fundamental shift in how engineering teams work—where AI agents handle significant portions of implementation while engineers define problems, review outputs, and own what ships to production.

This is a player-coach position leading engineers who direct AI agents daily. You'll own delivery, grow your people, and help evolve the team's capability as agent-led engineering matures from individual workflow enhancement toward autonomous agent fleets working within well-designed guardrails.

Responsibilities

• Own delivery outcomes: what ships, quality standards, and whether commitments hold
• Grow engineers through meaningful one-to-ones, honest performance conversations, and clear career development
• Lead hiring: set the technical bar, run interview loops, and assess for judgment and character over narrow AI experience
• Partner with Product as an equal to shape roadmaps, negotiate scope, and protect the team from unproductive churn
• Advance the team's AI-led engineering capability: spread what works, remove friction, and help design harnesses for autonomous agent work
• Stay technical roughly one day per week through reviews and selected implementation work to keep judgment sharp
• Engage directly with end users alongside your engineers to understand real problems firsthand

What We're Looking For

Must-have experience and capabilities:

• Track record managing engineers: hiring, performance management, and shipping on predictable cadences
• Backend engineering background with strong architecture instincts and current technical credibility
• Proven delivery history with specific shipped products and honest accounts of what worked and what didn't
• Experience building teams, not just running them: assessing potential, closing candidates, structuring effective onboarding
• Genuine engagement with AI-led engineering workflows—you use the tools yourself and want to improve how teams apply them
• Systems thinking: you diagnose process problems and fix the system rather than working harder inside broken ones
• Strong judgment and the confidence to make calls with incomplete information
• Near-native English fluency for written and verbal communication in a remote-first environment

• You grow people better than you solve problems yourself, and you've watched someone you managed surpass you at something
• You give difficult feedback early and kindly, and you've had the hard conversations more than once
• You work at eye level with Product, co-owning decisions rather than treating engineering as a delivery function
• Low ego: you take feedback from your own engineers and change your mind publicly when the data warrants it
• Business curiosity: you want to understand what your team's work is worth to paying customers

Nice to have:

• Python 3, Flask, gRPC, PostgreSQL, Redis, Celery, Kubernetes on GCP, or Vue.js experience
• Managing distributed teams across multiple countries and timezones
• Introducing new engineering practices to teams that didn't request them

Technical Environment

You'll be working with teams using AI agents in production today. Engineers write specifications and acceptance criteria using agent assistance, agents handle much of the implementation, and engineers own architecture, review, and shipping decisions. The current stack includes Slack-triggered agents handling well-scoped tickets, triage agents routing incoming work, and AI workers serving production customers with measurable accuracy and performance improvements.

The backend runs on Python 3, Flask, gRPC, PostgreSQL, Redis, Celery and Kubernetes on Google Cloud Platform, with Vue.js on the frontend.

Location and Work Arrangement

This is a remote position within the EMEA timezone band. Our client hires across approved European countries including Germany, Portugal, Poland, Spain, Ireland, the UK, and approximately twenty additional countries in the region. The team meets in person regularly including two company-wide offsites annually.

This is a permanent, full-time position.

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process based on your experience level and location.

This role includes equity participation in our client's company, company-provided AI tooling including Claude Code, a €650 home office budget, co-working space access, 24 paid vacation days plus local public holidays, and your choice of MacBook or Dell laptop.
